My big fear now? That Whit has an Al Brown moment and goes on a run in the MAC tourney and even if Beth actually planned to fire Whit (doubtful), winning the MAC tourney will buy him another year. I have nothing against the msn on a personal level— he seems like a good person, but he is not the leader the program needs. He just isn’t. Losing AT HOME to one of the worst teams in d1, on February 15 when our oh so incredibly young team (sarcasm) should have grown up by now is beyond unacceptable. But I’m sure there will be plenty of excuses and rationalizations. I don't think Whit is capable of pulling off 3 upsets in Cleveland. If you look at BSUs mac tourney history since he took over for most part BSU loses who they're supposed to minus Miami OH in 2016 and their 2 wins were vs meh MAC West schools. They'd have to at least beat 2 MAC East teams to make a run. Pressure our shooters and we won't beat anyone. If the other MAC coaches pay attention to what CMU and NIU did we won't win again this season.

Remember that one vividly. The banner was actually in 1986, when the team started fast then faltered in conference play. I think they finished third or fourth and then the hot streak in the tourney probably saved Brown. With the heart of that team gone the following year, he was a dead man walking. Another nice guy who was probably best served as the reliable "player's guy" assistant, and his career arc has proven that, not like it's a bad thing. Pretty similar to Whitford, in my opinion. Thinking back to those days, I’m sure Al was a continuity hire when Yoder left but it turned out to be a poor choice. The team he took over was loaded but but underachieved with him. Derailed the progression of the program Yoder had built. IF (a big if) Bsu were to move on from Whitford would we consider our team talented enough to challenge for the top with a new coach, or would a rebuild need to occur? I like some of the pieces we have, especially Sparks and Sellers. Cochran, when not out of control, is a warrior but with limitations. Jacobs could be decent but is too inconsistent. Thomas is too much of a problem I think and is also inconsistent. Hell they’re all wildly inconsistent. That’s the arc of Whits tenure. Inconsistency and inability to harness a team’s specific talents into a fully functioning ONE UNIT. As we’ve all said, it’s always a jumble of disparate talents that never truly mesh and there are always “fatal” weaknesses in the roster. We seemingly always devolve into an every man for himself shit show while the coach stares off into space. No one is in charge, from coach to players. Persons was in charge while he was here but he too flamed out. No true floor leader and no true direction from Whitford = annual dysfunction at some point, usually February/march.

My opinion is that the pieces are there and no rebuild would be necessary. I like a lot about our team - We have a solid starting 5 if we move Sellers up and Bumb to the bench. Bumb and Brown can provide some offense off of the bench. We need another big for depth. I think we need another 6-4 to 6-7 wing. Exit Huggins and Hendricks, insert servicable (rebounding and defense) big and athletic wing. Maybe get Windham motivated. We could have a pretty solid squad in year one with a different coach and different style of play

With transfer always in the mix now, if you axe Whitford (as we should), will the freshmen stay? It's a big question and if so you are definitely looking at a rebuild but that's the nature of the beast as a MM. The fact we are losing now to teams who blew it up and started over (CMU & NIU) shows that we have little to lose.

Also, it is entirely likely that players will leave even if Whitford remains. You'd have to be an entirely brain-dead player not to wonder how better competition, better coaching, and better exposure would enhance your future earning prospects.
Further, it has been shown over and over how a truely high quality coach can turn around a program much faster than many people imagine. And that is even much more true in today's transfer environment.

I was at the game last night. While I agree that they didn't play well, I think the insinuation that the boys didn't want it or didn't try is completely wrong. Maybe it didn't translate well on TV, but watching them walk off the court, no one is taking the L any harder than those boys.

First, and obviously, Whit needs to go as soon as someone can make the call. Second, regarding the rampant inconsistency this team (and really every Whit-led team) has shown, how much of it is due to lack of coaching? Would better (any?) coaching make us more consistent? How much better could this roster be? And last, the MVP of this team has to be whoever sews the armpit seams in Whit's coaching shirts. He has his hands jammed so tightly in there each game it's amazing they haven't given out.

Isn't there something in Whitford's contract that says if he is fired before a specific date BSU has to pay him something ridiculous like $500K beyond his buyout? In my mind that date was May 1.

Is it possible the date is some kind of tie-in to the academic semester calendar? I know plenty of big programs have the funds (and lawyers) to get around this, or is that kind of contract language unique to BSU?

Our guards got their asses handed to them tonight. Cochran and Bumb were terrible. I honestly have never seen a team miss so many point blank shots from 4 feet or less in my lifetime. Gang, this is the famous February Flop that is our coach's trademark, right? Whomever has followed this program for any length of time cannot be remotely surprised. It's the cartoon equivalent of Lucy yanking the football out from under Charlie Brown. Even though he knows she's gonna do it he still lines up and falls flat on his back...every effin time. The people doing the stats must be the same folks that count attendance at football games. Their count seems way low. Some of the turnover stats that I looked at didn't seem like they were from the same game that I had watched. Too, it was interesting to see Goetz talking with Mearns immediately after the game. Sure would like to have been a mouse listening to that conversation.

Is there a re-assignment clause in his contract? I recall Buckley got "re-assigned" instead of fired, I think to a fundraising position...
