Beyond the Longwood jokes (if anyone wants to go beyond the Longwood jokes), here's the other thing that makes this interesting.
As Cardfan notes, this coach is in his fourth year. Did he come from a big-time program where he was a top assistant? Does he have years of service as a college basketball coach? Did Longwood break the bank to hire this guy?
The answer to all questions is No.
Griff Aldrich played basketball somewhere called Hampden–Sydney. After graduating from law school, he returned there as an assistant coach for one year. He then embarked on a 16-year career as a corporate attorney. He returned to college basketball as Direct of Basketball Operations for University of Maryland-Baltimore County for a couple of years before being hired by Longwood. Longwood is paying him $150,000 a year. That's right, less than half of what BSU is paying Whitford. The most notable bonus in his contract is $2,500 for achieving wins over 15 Div I teams.
Clearly, this was an unconventional hire. Did Longwood have more financial resources than does BSU? No, but they had someone with vision and the balls to pull the trigger on a hire like this. Someone asked some hard questions, did some research, and dug below the surface on a guy who wasn't even a bench assistant at a small-time program (does anyone know the name of the Director of Basketball Operations at any school?). They found a guy who never left basketball. Even when he was a corporate attorney he coached some big-time AAU teams and players (DeAndre Jordan among them).
Truthfully, I'm not sure how they're getting away with paying him so little, but the guy has a history of working in impoverished areas. Founded a basketball program focused on faith, academics, and basketball. From what I can tell, he made his fair share of money as an attorney and although that doesn't stop most people from demanding more, maybe money doesn't mean that much to him.

Also playing for their conference tourney championship is Bellarmine, in only their second year of DI basketball. Their RPI is 128 and Longwood's is 149, compare those to our 248.

Longwood, low expectations, nothing to lose, only way to go was up, could afford to take a chance lesser conference, no football, etc etc…

What's your source for all that bullshit? I'm sure you have that completely wrong. As we have been told on good authority, the ONLY way to get a good coach is to outbid everyone for the most conventionally qualified candidate. Which is why we should STFU and be resigned to Whitford, and be thankful for mediocrity. That is unquestionable.

I've already printed out blank brackets and printed in LONGWOOD all the way on all of them. I'll fill in the rest later.
Longwood! Longerwood! LONGESTWOOD!

I have a suggestion for you guys to think over. What if we made a slight change to this forum. What if we just officially changed it from a Ball State Basketball forum to a Longwood Basketball forum? Think it over...there are a lot of advantages. For one thing, we could just delete all these long, painful, pointless threads that are so depressing in their year-after-year repetitiveness. Whip them clean. (Except, of course, the Bane Thread, which had but little to do with BSU anyway). Change the header to blue, and away we go.
We could all start wearing cool Longwood gear rather than lame BSU gear. Wearing "Longwood" across your chest would make you more intriguing to the ladies, and frankly you guys could use all the help you can get in that area.

Isn't it pretty clear what has happened? The administration at Longwood became aware of a strong pocket of support for their basketball program here at the OTP BSU basketball forum, and started to monitor our threads. They saw how far out in front of the Bane story we were. Then they stumbled upon the Sherman Plan. Recognizing the wisdom of the Sherman Plan for a program not rolling in money, they put it in motion and executed it to a "T". They identified a quality coach who did not have all the conventional qualifications that lead to the sort of bidding war that they can't never hope to win. They hired him for very reasonable money. Now they reap the rewards.
Meanwhile, some still idiotically cling to the conventional wisdom that you have to outbid the competition to get a good coach. They never explain how this plan has any relevance whatsoever for an athletic department that is a weak financial position. Clingers cling. That's just what they do.

In case you didn't know, the Ladies longing for Longwood also won the Big South Championship yesterday. They punched their ticket by out-humping the Camels of Campbell 86-47.
Maybe we are missing something more obvious here in terms of motivation. What if we went back to being known as Ball U?

Does Longwood call their gym “The Woodshed?”
Because if they don’t, I call trademark!

Wish I would have joined this board years ago, so do we think money is really the issue and we are the third in attendance in MAC, imagine changing name back to Ball U and then let’s flip HC and ASST for last year. Have to think that either would bring some excitement or noise. Bringing back Ball U would def be easier to pull off…. Just throwing out a solution if money is an issue.
