So in other words, after nine years, we still don't have the recruits to run a functioning pack line defense, but we run it anyway. That is some great coaching. Yeah 00 let's avoid the issue Jim's competency because it might hurt his feelings. What defense do you want us to play? We are using pack line and a zone sometimes to try to help inside, but you are right, we don't have ideal defensive play at center. It's probably the best fit for a team that is small up front even without that perfect element of a shot blocker.
The pack line, any help defense, and a zone for that matter, are all often designed to help mask individual defense weakness. Having a big shot blocker is relatively rare in the MAC. Every team has better defense if and when they get a guy like that.

Ball State teams have played good defense with less talent. This is on the coach not the kids.

So in other words, after nine years, we still don't have the recruits to run a functioning pack line defense, but we run it anyway. That is some great coaching. Yeah 00 let's avoid the issue Jim's competency because it might hurt his feelings. If we had a Lonnie Jones, sure, maybe packline would work. But, it's a pretty bad recipe every year to have guards constantly getting beat off the dribble and no one inside to stop the drive or at least make the driver think about it. And if we don't have the size and athleticism on the perimeter to guard out there, well, we continue to have what we have. That's my biggest gripe with small unathletic guards. And, with playing freshmen who seem to take an age to learn to defend in college.
It's not a flaw in the pack line concept, exactly, it's like someone else said, we need to have enough good athletes who learn to help and recover. Having Lonnie Jones, even for 20 minutes a game, allows you to pressure more shooters and gamble. He'd be great! But how many Lonnie Jones are there? Trey Moses was a plus, even Teague was better than Sparks in that role.
If there is an inherent flaw with the pack line is it makes it hard to pressure the ball after a pass, and the best pack line teams have had an excellent defender at guard who gets out on the ball handler, has very good help and recover, gambles occasionally and forces the ball into the middle where there is a crowd.
But even the best versions are vulnerable to teams with good shooters who get screens. You just have to get out there fast enough so you do not give up totally wide open shots.

I have demonstrated in an earlier thread that this year's team plays the worst defense of any BSU team for at least 48 years, and possibly longer.
A good, spirited debate can be had on the topic of exactly where and how Whitford has failed so badly after having ample time to "build the program"
So I would ask our favorite Whitford apologist what he thinks about this
is Whitford's failure in:
1) recruiting poor defensive players? 2) having a bad defensive scheme? 3) coaching and instructing players on defense?
Maybe 00mph can assign a percentage to each?

JUST FIRE THE ''COACH'' AND GET IT OVER. IT IS TIME TO END THIS NIGHTMARE. IF WE KEEP UP WITH THIS CHARADE MUCH LONGER NO ONE WILL ATTEND THE SO CALLED GAMES. FOR THE LOVE OF MARY AND ALL THAT IS HOLY JUST CUT THE HEAD OF THIS UGLY SNAKE OFF.

The past dozen or so new threads have been interesting for a new guy who stumbled across this fan page to read. The perception of this outsider reading these is that we should be a top 100 team every year. We should be recruiting and deserve only 4 and 5 star athletes and the Coach whomever that is, should never make a bad decision.
Coaching aside, what would draw 4 & 5 Star recruits to Muncie Indiana?
Sure our campus is nice but so are other universities. Our Basketball facilities are ok but not near as nice as many surrounding schools within 3-4 hours drive. Central Indiana weather isn't really desirable. Our Educators are good but not necessarily outstanding to influence a recruit. While we have had good teams in the past, there is no long standing tradition of greatness to attract recruits.

I certainly understand someguys point of view but we tend to disagree outside of Muncie itself.
We have an outstanding campus certainly better than most, if you want to be an educator, nurse, architect, communications, theatre, etc actually top ranked in several of these areas and others.
Our basketball facility is frankly just as nice as most I’ve been to; I do not find Assembly Hall or Purdue to be nicer; bigger but no nicer. And, Butler not as nice. ND okay. Indiana State not as good, Evansville or Valpo not as nice.
I think recruiters can recruit! Period. Ray and Majerus seemed to recruit just fine and until new administration came in I think Buck did okay.
No free pass any longer.

I think someguy says it all. We should just accept we are crap and give up.
We are not worthy of being a top 100 program or of the Mid-American Conference, which some team must win every year. Schools in such desirable places as Oxford Ohio and Mt Pleasant Michigan. Not to mention Kalamazoo!
We should extend Whitford for another 400K+ per year this year. We are so lucky to have him.

Plus we should extend Whitford for another 400K+ per year this year. And we demand and deserve those 4 and 5 star recruits! What the hell?

What exactly are you trying to say? Where you going with this? And not a single person on this board has EVER said we should be getting 4-5 star recruits. Ever. And we actually like this year’s freshman class pretty damn well.

Step 1: In one of your first few posts, piss on what the long-time posters are bitching about.
Step 2: Play the victim when getting called out on it.
