I realize that things are different today. No question about it. Maybe I have an inherent bias for guys that win. It is a risk regardless of the path we choose. True. Unfortunately in this day and age, risk is something that has to be measured very carefully. We know BSU is risk averse, (hence, coaches like Taylor and Whitford) and we know BSU is PR and image conscious, and very much into mental health and all that affects it. So, what kind of message would it send to take on Brannen, who IS a helluva coach, but had the wheels come totally off at UC, for MANY reasons? One thing that is really weird to me, is how image conscious BSU is. I mean, there are not that many people that care that much one way or another about a middle sized state university in Muncie, Indiana. Virtually no one outside of the state has any idea BSU even exists, unless they are fans of another MAC school and know that way. |

As an alum who lives 1200+ miles away, I agree on both counts (positive things to say and Letterman comes up). I’m often surprised by how many people also say, “Didn’t they have some pretty good basketball teams a few years ago?” Hesitant to remind them it’s been 30 years. And of course there is always the requisite need to explain the origin of “Ball”. That part is frustrating. |
