The MAC should scrap the useless tournament, go back to giving the regular season some meaning and be (almost) unique in the nation. I know all the teams want a shot at the tournament but if they played decent basketball with good players and coaching during the regular season we could get a couple of bids for the NCAA. I agree 100%. It makes no sense to send a weak team that got hot at the right time. What you do over the course of the season means a whole lot more than just stringing together a few wins at the end.

To me the conference tournaments amount to an extension of the NCAA tournament and basically turn it into an all inclusive tournament. That is with the exception of a few teams transitioning to D1 and are not eligible.
Frankly Toledo, the team that won our #1 Seed and would have been our automatic bid in a no conference tournament scenario, was probably really the fifth best team in the conference. They would not have been the MAC's best team if they got our bid. Unless we cut back the non-conference season and play a 22 game home/home conference schedule the teams play unbalanced schedules. Sending a regular season champ isn't totally fair. Regardless I'd be in favor of a 22 game conference schedule. That would cut the non-conference to 8 games.

You just cut the tournament. We play 20 games now (only played 19 this year because one game was COVIDized). You cut the tournament and add 2 regular season games during what used to be the tournament week and you've got your balanced schedule.

Whatever MAC TV is worth, it'd be worth less than trying to sell regular season games that last week. A very good chance none of those games counting for much...
Good point above this is extension of the NCAA tourney. Every team with chance!
The tourney with it's 3 games in 3 days is without doubt not in many ways as "fair" as regular season. If the conference championship is what counts in itself, and the NCAA game is sort of a trophy with high visibility for a game or two, I heartily agree.
Does that trump the revenue and the drama?

Only the championship game is on ESPN2, and it is a part of the league's decade long TV deal that isn't really worth that much at all. I don't have numbers without doing some Google searches, but there is absolutely no way the league makes money on this tournament.

Back in 2014: Tweet
$8 mill a year through the '26-'27 season, although it supposedly increased to $10 mill a year in '17.

I plugged each school’s coordinates into a “geographic center” calculator and the geographic center of our conference is about right between BGSU and Toledo.

Would disagree that they are not at least breaking even on the event; BYTW, all games for both the women and men were available via streaming services and tv. Is MAC Tournament 2022 streaming?Yes. Men's and women's games will be streaming on ESPN+ and Paramount+. The women's championship game will be on the Paramount+. Thursday's men's basketball games will be streaming on ESPN+, while Friday games will be streaming on Paramount+. The men's final is streaming on ESPN+. Is the MAC Tournament on TV?Both championship games are on networks, with the women's team playing on CBS Sports Network, which is also available on Hulu Live streaming services. Friday's men's games are also on CBS Sports Network. The MAC Championship Game will be aired on ESPN2. I

Here's another point about taking regular season champions as the automatic bid. If that had been the rule, Iona, not St. Peter's would have been the MAAC representative in the NCAA Tournament.

Columbus Ohio is the answer. Great Arena that can be leased at a reasonable rate, and centrally located. Detroit is a hellhole that shouldn't host anything, Indy and Chicago are too expensive and I doubt either city would really want the event. Indy already has Big10 (biannually) and Horizon League Tourney. Maybe they could swap on the off Big10 years.

Based on the attendance, there are a number of Indiana high school gyms that could host... They could hang some angle iron, plywood and folding chairs in the Wigwam as suites for the MAC officials.

They are occupying an NBA arena for an entire week. Ticket revenues are horrible. I've done exhaustive searches and have yet to find a contract amount, but you can bet it is salty.
