Seems there are consequences to living on excuses and patiently watching your program go to shit for 20 years. Consequences for not having a following in Indy area where at best we would be behind IU,PU, BU and not likely to be seen on the nightly sports or be covered in the IndyStar.
Way too many casual fans and even our alums put us in the same group as IUPUI, ISU. Mike Lewis showed his age when he referred to his college days when he knew BSU was the class of mid majors in Indiana. But even then we probably had more national media presence because of our NCAA run. Chandlers dunk no small part of that.
Lewis is working the press hard, but I don't expect it to be easy to change that.
Do you not think we belong in the same group as Indiana state? If so, you must mean because we are in a lower group than they are. They have a better basketball history than we do and it isn’t particularly close

Not sure whether that is about the fans themselves or whether it is that the lack of Indy media coverage, but we just don't have alumni who follow us. That is a huge barrier to overcome when marketing BSU tickets in Indy Area. A marketing plan based on attracting fans from a population center 60 miles away is a hard sell.

It has to do with the fact we haven't been any good in twenty years. I love the way you attempt to blame the fans and the Indianapolis media but put no onus on Ball State itself.

But do not pretend that in that very good year where we drew 7700 fans average, with our best team in history arguably, don't pretend that number had a huge component of Indy fans. Don't pretend we had 4000 fans streaming up from Indy. Maybe more like 400...
And don't pretend that same potential attendance is still out there and would return with a better product on the floor.
This is not blaming any fans, it is simply demographics. Population decline, decline in general interest in basketball, aging, disposable income, alternative competing basketball on TV, and other entertainment media all combine.

Just stop, I know about a hundred IU grads who drive from northern Hamilton county to every IU game. If you put an entertaining product on the floor people will show-up. You are a million excuses wrapped-up in a cocoon of bullshit.

You are a million excuses wrapped-up in a cocoon of bullshit. Can't argue with that. Looking at the student section for about 2 decades how do you take all those years of students and make them suddenly excited about Ball State Basketball when they were not excited while they were here? Even if there were an exciting product on the floor why would they leave whatever they currently follow just because their diploma has the name of a University they never engaged with anyway? All of the MAC schools face the same problem. Toledo and Ohio seem to have rejuvenated their student sections and Akron Kent have their diehard alums and current students but it has been a long time since the crowd under the visitors basket has been consistently engaged. Hard to imagine anyone from the era being as engaged an alum as the folks who came through when Palumbizio was on the floor or when Majerus and Hunsaker were at the helm. There is some truth in the "potential attendance" comment but the reality is that Ball State is going to have to grow a whole new fanbase to replace those "older and dying" folks mentioned in threads.

You are a million excuses wrapped-up in a cocoon of bullshit. Right...A school with a B10 schedule and state wide publicity on everything they do, convincing comparison...
No doubt we can increasd attendance with a better product.
But...They built and have filled a 17000 seat arena many years ago charging a handsome ticket price. We should compare the feasibility of getting similar Indy area attendance?
Let's just ignore number of grads, income level, and all the other factors. In our best days in the 90's go back and compare our attendance to IU attendance. We did not come close to attracting Indy fans then and will not do it today
In comparing the 90's to today You want to ignore
1. Smaller population in Muncie 2. Lower income level
3. No players or coaches from the area on the team 4. Lower interest among students 5. More competing basketball for free
Those and other reasons make it awfully hard to think we'll make up those losses with attendance from Hamilton County.

Nice strawman, I never insinuated we would compete with IU in total crowd size. Seriously, how dumb are you ?

Going back to our historic inferiority complex I wonder what percentage of our alums are embarrassed or apologetic for attending BSU.

Easier. Make the case we can get significant Indy enrollment to offset the certain losses of local attendance. Which was my point just above.
