With the number of BSU grads that have gone into on-air announcing (especially more recently with Sportslink), it'll be interesting to see if one of them becomes the new Director of Broadcast.
Some names:
Pat Boylan Connor Onion Mick Tidrow Luke Martin
And the old guard: Jeremiah Johnson Kevin Lee Vince Welch
I've talked to a few others (non-BSU grads) that are very interested in the job. Jack McMullen, who voices the women's games, may be the favorite. Another Syracuse grad, FWIW.
Any others?

Boston. Sounds like he may be taking a different direction in his career path.

Spoke with him today and he said he didn't have anything lined up at this point. Not sure what that means. I never thought leaving a job before you had a job was a smart move.

I'm just very glad to see him move on. Pat would be great, but this might be a step backwards for him in his career at this point.

It seems to me that contemporary announcers particularly on radio comment on everything and the play by play becomes secondary.

Mick Tidrow is the answer. Home grown.

Mick will be good. Very enthusiastic, and a BSU grad.

Joel leaving was a real surprise. Be interested in watching a Ball State person come in to be “The Voice” for Ball State Sports - similar to Morris Mannies! I wish him luck and a long tenure at Ball State.

Quite frankly, I'm shocked Joel stayed as long as he did. I always just assumed BSU was a stepping stone to a full-time ESPN/FoxSports/SECNet type of gig when he was hired, especially when he started working non-BSU games on the side a few years in. Things played out quite differently than I expected (him staying for 10 years, him leaving (at least for now) the broadcasting world, etc.). He grew on me. I was really impressed in particular by his calls of the non-rev sports, and that was really what won me over. You could tell his level of commitment in that he seemed to know whatever sport and whatever team/players to the same level as he would the football/basketball teams when watching these games. We watch a LOT of volleyball in our house, for example, and have heard a LOT of bad calls of volleyball games by folks that either don't know the game or DO know the game but just aren't good on the mic, so Joel's efforts for both volleyball teams were definitely appreciated. Based on what he has stated, that level of perfection is part of what caused him to step down, as his perfectionist tendencies led him to stress and discontent (or at least that was my read). I wish him well. And I wish Mick Tidrow well in his new role.

Hi all! It’s been a minute for me on here. So much so that I cannot remember my old username. Anyway, came to say that if you don’t know Mick, you’re going to love him. He’s super talented and very passionate about BSU. If I was leading the hire, he would’ve been my #1 choice. BSU athletics nailed it!
