I'm sure Dartmouth basketball costs more than it takes in. Through having greater-than-average height and athleticism, these players get to take part in a fun activity that a lot of their smaller and less talented fellow students would love to be able to participate in. What leverage do these players imagine they have? They've been chugging some idiotic left-wing union Kool-aid.
The only relevance to this story is that it might give some ideas to, say for example, Ohio State football players.

Like football bowl games have exhibited, I wonder if we will see the NIT tournament impacted by basketball teams that have players opting for the portal instead of playing on In FB there is so much greater chance of injury that must be the bigger a factor in skipping bowl games, that can't be the same factor in BB.
The FB player has a short window in December where he wants to transfer to get in Spring Practice at the new school. Maybe more is that draft status enters into the equation during Bowl season, which has been a motivation there. Neither an issue in BB.
The BB portal opens in Spring before the tournaments are complete but entry would only be delayed at most a few weeks by playing, so that seems less a factor. The shorter portal window rule change is a slight factor but I doubt it is much.

Hard to compute damages. Much smaller for sure. It's not exactly a nuisance suit, the theory is the same but economics are a lot different.
FB was where the money has been, even with value of the NCAA Tournament.
