bsu.smartcatalogiq.com/en/2021-2022/Undergraduate-Catalog/Courses/ENG-English/400/ENG-494Doesn't really seem like something that is going to prepare students to compete in the job market, but that argument can be used for most electives such as philosophy or many PE classes. Never having been an English major, I can only assume that it is replete with the study of Shakespeare, Hemingway and other dead authors, so maybe this class makes sense in ways I cannot fathom... or maybe, just maybe it's an indication of how far college campuses have moved culturally to the left since the time I graduated.

I couldn't say I knew what "Queer Literature" is. Then I read this this . Now I really have no idea...
Two observations.
First this course is not required. How likely is it taught every year or taken by many students? That would be interesting to know in terms of how important it is taken to be in a Lit major.
Second, granting that there has been queer culture through the ages and granting we are now accepting queer culture to a much greater extent in public life, I guess it makes sense literary academia takes a look at the literature that is part of that culture. It's probably at the intersection of sociology and literature.
Your point stands though. This probably makes sense, but it still is hard to see exactly how important it is. I would like to see the reading list and I wonder if it makes sense to devote a semester's study to an advanced lit student or if it is just a way to generate attendance in a trendy area.

Universities are trying their hardest to make themselves obsolete. It's not like studies of topics on the fringe of ordinary interest were not always part of University life. That part is not a surprise at all.
And of course, as much as we all love literature, English majors never defined the University.

Special space is allotted to LGBTQ films on various streaming channels and the work place or "job market" consists of LBGTQ folks. Amazon has a plethora of LGBTQ literature for sale. What I got from the definition of Queer Theory is that in post modern world the norms that have defined our existence in binary terms have been and are being challenged. The definition of male/female always straight forward, not so much now. Admittedly I am in some very tall weeds here but think that the coarse has some merit in understanding what the hell is going on.
