Last year, we lost handedly to two of those teams

Would appear our seniors were not as good as theirs...Not sure what it means for this year.

Feels like a 6th losing season in 7 seasons Nice to have the built-in excuse button (above) already ready

Feels like a 6th losing season in 7 seasons Nice to have the built-in excuse button (above) already ready I agree it does not bode well. But it's more a pretty objective explanation than "excuse." How many young D1 FB teams are winning teams? There is good reason for that.

Be a good boy and eat your veggies and don't fire the coach over a 4/5 win season this year

If we really suck again this season it’s an indictment on Neus program building ability. I love the guy and he’s one of my favorite Cardinals but if we can’t even pull .500 this far in then we’re stuck with one winning season every 7 years the rest of his tenure and that’s gotten previous coaches fired.

By most accounts from what I have read we have reasons to be excite about the new kids that will be playing in the next couple of seasons. It is hard to built a program that wins every year from a program who does not have that history. Stick with this guy and let us see what happens

Last year with all the extra year guys playing again was definitely not program building. Hard to evaluate the resulting turnover this year in that framework. A good job would have ups and downs but you're right you should get a couple of winning seasons out of a good job rebuilding, and a genuine good season every 4 or 5. The part I don't want to see is the dismal collapse after a good group graduates.

The unfortunate thing for Neu is that with the transfer rules, you can't take 2-3 years to rebuild. Half of the young kids who show promise during this season likely will be gone next year. A good possibility you'll never see this year's most talented freshmen as juniors, certainly not as seniors.
I think if you're a coach in these times, you have to be able to rebuild on the fly. If you have to say "Wait 'til next year," that's a next year you'll likely never see.

How exactly do you do that? It won't be by recruiting HS kids to replace losses. FB has a lot more development and training required to put a player on the field.
Maybe some kind of revolving door using the portal to get kids from higher level programs who are recruited over?

Interesting here is that no one’s really wrong Mikes overall body of work would have had him fired at most any other school. Then he hit the Hail Mary won a Mac conference title and a bowl game. That buys you a couple years anywhere. How long does that buy you at Ball State? We saw how long you can stay a basketball coach here and that guy never won anything. Even if we go winless nothing would happen this year. Then you play next year with some young new kids and you win 3 maybe 4, you then say look this is the same trajectory we were on before we a Mac championship. It’s going to take two disasters in a row or a disaster after that 3 or 4 win season. ONly thing that might change that is if Beth moves on

If this year a real disaster Neu could be in a do or die year. Boosters would have to also turn on him.
Don't think the AD makes a big difference.
I doubt a new AD comes in who would make haste to undo Beth's plans and take on a BSU OG who is well liked by alumni.
