This game really didn't give us much of a clue about the rest of the season.
Would have been nice to have a surprisingly good thing or two come out of it instead of a seeing weaknesses exploited that we knew were there.
The idea we might come out hot and knock UT back on their heels and somehow stay in the game was kind of remote chance.
We made mistakes, which we in a more perfect world we might have avoided, but in any realistic outlook we had to expect. But it is beyond me to tell how much of the blowout poor outcome was being outmatched, how much it was really our failure to play up to expectations.
Hey, if we did not suffer injury, and if we come out of the game with some video with information coaches can use, we have a long week to get ready for a must win game. It's a teaching tool we would not have had playing cupcake opener.
I see what you're saying and that might be true of the players, but I do believe what we saw from the staff was more of the same we've seen with Neu and his staff over the years and also a harbinger of things to come from the staff this year, such as stupid decisions, putting the kids in no-win situations, an unprepared team, and an undisciplined, fundamentally bankrupt team. Like I said earlier, my biggest issue with Neu and his staff is all of those things. I love their enthusiasm and true Cardinals and all that, but man, the Play calling, game mgmt, clock mgmt, situational awareness, lack of discipline on the field and dumb penalties. It’s never changed. The championship run we managed to minimize and overcome all that stuff (remember Plitt with the trrrible int that lost the Miami game and almost blew the whole deal in the Wmu game) and got on a great roll. Those players began believing and playing with confidence swagger and punch. last year was a return to sloppy mush and we saw that again last night. The talent will have to learn to overcome that again.

Hard to be "prepared" for a much better team where you have no edge and can't simulate the other team in practice.
Can't be sure we were "sloppy" or unprepared. No more than expected in a first game. UT was going to make us look bad, that made it worse probably.

UT was going to make us look bad, that made it worse probably. We’re not talking just the UT Game. Sure and there may be a touch of that we saw. But still, while you say "last year was a return to sloppy mush and we saw that again last night." you are certainly correct in that last year it was definitely a self inflicted train wreck considering how many Covid seniors were playing. Holding that experienced group to a high standard makes sense, even in a first game.
In last night's train wreck we are talking about good opponent, a first game, a hostile environment, and a lot of new faces. That's a different story.
My comment is more along the line that it's just not clear that we were all that poorly prepared or mushy soft considering all that. A great job preparing them might have eliminated some of those short field scoring drives or forced a FG instead of a TD on their drives, but some of the critical mistakes were almost to be expected, not the same as last year's lack of intensity by players. This game had several unfortunate turns that seemed to be due to a desire to be aggressive and that was all in context of heat of the moment coaching decisions, not prior preparation or disorganized play by the team.

It’s early but Wmu d looks big and physical on d vs Michigan state. Two 3 and outs on first msu possessions. Commentator indicated Wmu is heavily experienced. They look really strong but we’ll see how it plays out over the course of the game.

Western is going to beat us by 3 scores. Their fronts are going to dominate us. Looking at the size and physicality of the Wmu fronts we don’t seem to compare to that, but hopefully we’ll get after it. (Why do our lines always seem smaller and weaker than other MAC schools?)

Our players and coach were very positive and upbeat after the game last night. For them it was more about “how did we play after getting down big” and their vibe is the team kept grinding, kept working. They know the score was bad and they know they made a lot of mistakes but that isn’t stopping them from feeling GOOD about what they CAN do the rest of the way. They’re ready to get back to practice to work on stuff and get after Wmu. That’s far more important than how I feel as an alum/fan. Go Cards! I get what you're saying here, but there's a certain Whitford-esque "played the right way" ring to it.

And I get what you’re saying. Talk is cheap, gotta prove it on the field.

Western is going to beat us by 3 scores. Their fronts are going to dominate us. Western dominated us in 2020 and we won that one. Let’s not put anything past the Broncos.

Playing the right way is a good idea.
Whit and other coaches may stretch the term on occasion. cardfan is right to say we'll see if it was enough the right way to make fans happy.
Who expects this year to be ecstatically happy though, which may be a comparison to the Whitford years...not enough happy it was fair to say.

Most expected something like this. This has happened many times before. Just too many young players. All of you know the drill. We come back to Muncie with a big check forget about it and get ready for Western. Now is when our season begins. Go Cardinals Go
