Drove by Beneficence yesterday and noticed that there were tears streaming down her face. I stopped and asked her why. She told me that the University had prostituted it's good name by selling or agreeing for a company to use it to sell a grooming device for male private parts. The name Ball in Ball State represents the Ball brothers and their significant contributions to not only to Muncie but also the nation. The name must be defended and respected by the University. It is one thing to have Ball on a jar and another to have the name associated with a testicle shaving device. Ball State has been called testicle tech for decades by individuals on and off this board. That is fair. You know freedom of speech. I don't ever recall the University ever acknowledging or associating with that name thus disrespecting the Name Ball and more importantly the five Ball brothers.

The university has licensed it name to be marketed on "Ball U" merchandise for years. It must be ok to use the brothers' name as a verb.

Ball U became a verb when Ball state students went to Florida on Spring break with Ball U t shirts. Other students had not really heard of Ball State and figured it meant fuck you or U. I think several of those shirts were sold down there. This I think was during the 60's. Still to me Ball U is a noun.

"Ball St founded 104 years ago by two brothers named Ball" ? So Grayson there are five columns in front of Beneficence? Could it be that there were other Ball brothers who had a hand in founding Ball state?

''Benny'' wasn't crying for the misuse of the school name, she was crying because she needed a ''Brazilian'' and did not have the money one for herself.

There was a DN story in that time frame about Spring Break, trading Ball U shirts with other schools at a premium, have the impression it was a new event then.

The volleyball players would take sweatshirts to California in the 60’s when they played in the NCAA championships.

I started in '71...All through the 70s students would load up on Ball U gear and finance their trips to Florida. You could buy it on the beach in Daytona

Can anyone find the above mentioned article in the daily news do they have an archived section Library has a Digital Media Repository.
I did not get anywhere searching it. And since my recollection wasn't very specific, and no doubt is faulty in some way, I would not be optimistic about using it and finding the history of Ball U shirts...
