So many times in baseball that the runs scored in one inning is enough to do the trick. Hopefully we do it to them today.

So many times in baseball that the runs scored in one inning is enough to do the trick. Hopefully we do it to them today. You always try to avoid giving up "the big inning". There's usually one in every game. I think the big turning point was in the third inning. BSU goes up 2-0, then in the bottom of the 3rd, they scored a run with two outs. Never give up runs with two outs. It gave them the momentum they needed for a big 4th inning. In the 4th, two walks, one hit and generated no outs. Butler gave up a walk, 4 hits, a passed ball, and generated no outs. Haro came in and closed out the inning by getting them to pop out twice and ground out once. Korson was the only pitcher that could consistently strike people out. He faced 10, struck out 3, walked one and gave up a hit. By then, it was too late. It was good that we could come back and generate a run after that 4th. Avoiding "the big inning" always starts with pitching. We gotta get better.

BSU did a nice job hitting the ball. It's obvious defense is killing us.
Two errors help contribute to four un-earned runs. Our pitching threw 51.4% strikes (in the 60s is good; over 67% is great); 6 walks vs. 2 strikeouts; gave up 14 hits and we allowed 6 runs with two outs. You close out the inning and six runs don't show up on the board.
BSU fought back, so they were in the game and not intimidated by LSU. That is a good sign.

Decent series against legitimate competition. Fix the problem areas and could be a good season.

Cardfan12 sums it up.
Based on our preseason record thus far, we will have to win the MAC tournament to get to post season (as usual). Our hitting has Improved the last two weeks but, unless the pitching becomes more consistent and the fielding picks up, we can't rely on out-scoring teams in an extended series to be at the top of the conference.
We've played some strong competition and some not so strong teams and our pitching has been suspect against both. I'm sure Maloney is as puzzled with Zach's progress lately as he was with Baker those last two years. I was hoping he would be dominant with Butler behind him this year.
