Sandy has to think about that. It's necessary to promote good will with your staff and if Sandy sees the arrow as being up as I do and likes what he sees down the road, then, yes, an extension would be a way to promote that good will. Otherwise, there's the risk of having to come to the table the following year while others are possibly there too and he hadn't done what he could to show commitment when he could have. Maybe he could wait until late December or January. I don't really know how those things work. Yes the arrow is up in terms of improvement from 2 terrible seasons but in three years we haven't even made it to Cleveland in a league where the conference tournament means everything. This year factoring SOS in was on par with an average year in the Buckley era (think 2003-04) and the best year of Taylor era in 2010-11. To get an extension we need to see that this program can be consistently better than the Buckley era outside of a rebuilding year. somewhere in between Hunsicker and Buckley era (McCallum era perhaps?) is what I expect for the program. I hope Sandy waits 1 yr to either extend or part ways with Whitford.

I'd like to play Indiana State, Valpo, and Butler (ideally) every year. I'd like to play one or two teams from IUPUI, IPFW, Evansville, Purdue, IU and Butler (realistically) every year. I'd like to play at least one non-Indiana team from each of the Missouri Valley, Ohio Valley, Horizon, and Summit League every year, preferably a team with about the same standing in those conferences that we have in the MAC. I'd like to not see non-Div 1 teams on the schedule. Butler would probably still be on the schedule if Ronny Thompson hadn't cancelled the series in his quest to play "nationally recognized opponents". The relationship hasn't been the same since, although they have played a couple of times recently.

Losing Butler as a long term home and home is probably something that would have happened anyway, although I hadn't thought about yet another way Ronnie Thompson might have screwed us...
Butler like other "major" schools just doesn't have much incentive to come to Muncie. And now they are probably not any longer a mid major in basketball, having decoupled football and joining a conference without that requirement they are in great shape going forward. Something we could not have had much control over.

It's too bad because I always liked that series and it was, at one time, an accurate barometer on which team was going to have a successful season.

As far as playing us, Butler is now in a classic position of nothing-to-be-gained-by-playing-a-lesser-in-state-program.
For example, I doubt than any Butler fans are currently discussing the old series with BSU, as they prepare to watch their squad play in Madison Square Garden alongside a couple top 10 teams.

Butler tends to keep an in state traditional opponent on their schedule. I believe their contract with Indiana State is now over. So there might be an opportunity for some sort of front-loaded two for one deal. Although Evansville might be their preference.
