When and how did ISU get so good? When they hired a guy who freaking dominated in D2 (337-69 record) who has a ton of experience in winning and has an established style that players evidently are attracted to. ISU wasn't good his first year but last year they improved quite a bit. This year, damn. They just have a really good, experienced head coach who knows what he's doing.

No mystery really. He got three high quality players out of the portal. Three of his top four scorers are from the portal this year.
He is using the portal as a weapon rather than an excuse. Imagine that. Some of you better not think too hard about it...your heads will implode.
Anyway, it's going to be interesting to have a look at them. At #54 they are in shouting distance of at-large bid territory. Of course they have VERY little margin of error for that.

Without FBS FB it is their headline Program. We had one player with notable NIL from the portal, not so much NIL required for freshmen but slower ROI.

We had one player with notable NIL from the portal, not so much NIL required for freshmen but slower ROI. Slower ROI is a huuuuuuge advantage for an excuse-based program like BSU. It can be stretched out into a multi-year excuse. The slower the better! And when/if the freshman are developed and then transfer off somewhere else for their most productive years....budda-BANG! Another excuse! Just like this year! You see....I get it. I haven't hung around these boards twenty-some years for nothing.

We're too busy renaming our HR Department the "Office of People and Culture."
I wish I was kidding.

I think it probably has to do more with coaching and just identifying players that will work with what the coach wants to do than it does stealing "high quality players out of the portal" or giving them tons of NIL. That transfer that's leading the team is scoring is a 5-10 guard from Southern Indiana. That's Southern Indiana of the OVC who was sub.-500 last year and ranked in the low 200s. I doubt Schertz was locked in a high-stakes recruiting battle involving thousands in NIL cash for a 5-10 guard from a low 200s program. More likely he identified a player who could do the things he wanted and was probably able to pick him up without much fuss. Possibly Schertz regarded him highly because he had lit up Indiana State last year for 28 points.
