Buffalo’s HC Maurice Linquist left to be Alabama’s Co-Defensive Coordinator along with South Alabama’s HC. Kaleb DeBoer is really going for HC experience on his staff. I know it makes financial sense and it’s big time football, but I always think it’s got to be hard to leave a HC spot for an assistant. I wonder who Buffalo will hire? Former Ball State O-Line coach Jason Eck looks good in Idaho, maybe his name will start popping up places.

I feel like it's an easy decision to move from MAC head coach to DC at Alabama. The pay is certainly better, and you probably have a better chance at getting another HC job at a higher level school. Plus, the atmosphere is 50 times better at Alabama on gameday.

I could see a fair number of mid major head coaches trying to do this with the new landscape of college sports

I read where Ohio St is talking to Jason Candle about becoming their offensive coordinator. If Toledo’s head coach leaves for a coordinator position (I’ll be surprised if he does) it’ll tell you all you need to know about the current state of MAC level football.

Candle makes $1.1M/year as HC. I can't imagine Ohio State's OC makes that much more. This would surprise me!

It would surprise me too, but Candle may be thinking his window is closing since he's not moved up despite success. May have to go the "crowned with P5 approval" by being a coordinator at a super high level program.

And you're right it would add credibility.

Apparently Saban retired due to the new landscape of college sports. My opinion is he's frustrated that it's all out in the open now and has diminished his competitive advantage... A lot of people who retire at 72 retire because they are...72. Also he felt like other schools were using the possibility of his retirement against him in recruiting. Recruiting has always been a soul-draining pain in the ass for college coaches, NIL or no NIL, portal or no portal. In my opinion, it's the main reason why you see previously winning coaches start failing. They just can't bring themselves to put in the same effort into recruiting any more. They fool themselves into thinking they can keep winning just through their general wonderfulness...and of course they can't.

And I agree - I can't imagine chasing 18-22 year olds around and begging them and their parents to come to my school.

I'm sure all that is a big reason why Harbaugh is interviewing for NFL jobs again. He's got his ring, why fiddle with all the college bullshit anymore?
