Purdue fired their OC because the offense sucks. Mike should fire our DC because the defense blows bigger than Mt. Vesuvius, but he won’t because he just doesn’t make moves that could save his ass. Certainly not in season. And no I’m not sure who you’d replace him with. lynch knows how to stop an offense….. Unfortunately, he can't call the "other" team's offensive plays.

Gimme 100 grand and Ill teach a base D and tackling for a week and have us looking better than we have been That's a hell of an hourly rate. I'd bet these players know how already. Getting them to look better in a game requires getting their heads in the right place. Focus. Apart from physical limitations which we've all seen, that's where the coaches have failed.

It’s as if the coaches have no clue how to prepare the players on the scheme itself and there’s no focus whatsoever. Just 11 dudes running around with zero attention to detail and no understanding of how to be in position to make plays. Very poor fundamentals and a seeming lack of effective game planning or adjustments. No trust evident. Just listen to the veteran Newsome after each game. He’s frustrated, disgusted, angry about what’s going on around him. Look at how slow they all look. Stuck in mud. No communication. No adjustments. Have to think the lack of belief in what they’re doing and in each other is really negatively impacting the defense. we know what the offense is— we’ve seen it every year since 2021 with very little change. No idea what the defense is other than not involved in games.

And after Neu and staff are let go, it will be another 3 years of rebuilding (assuming we hire the right guy).

Portal recruiting might speed the personnel change, but unless we get a coach with an established staff, there will be a lag. We will lose some players and coaches we would want. Recruiting will be a mixed bag first year. Biggest problem in FB though may be the number of coaches who need to get on the new same page with so many players. Too often nobody knowing each other well. Bringing in a coach with some staff he had at the last stop seems to work best.

Coaches coach and recruiters recruit. He's gotten really effective players from the portal, including Ohio U.'s Qb and he's changed the mindset of those who returned. The dude can just coach. Not saying we can get a proven winner like him, but hopefully we can attract a true go getter with energy and desire to win quickly and move up. The portal can make that much easier if mined properly. Neu just hasn't taken enough advantage of the portal. He's probably taken too many high school kids we have to wait on to be ready to contribute and while we've had some success in the portal its not been nearly enough. And the Kelly situation is gonna haunt him.....

Cignetti is a hell of a coach. IU fans will be devastated when Florida poaches him in the off season.
Would love Haines as the next coach but I don’t think he would take it. He’s making over a mil a year as DC and he could be Cignetti’s replacement..

He’s making over a mil a year as DC and he could be Cignetti’s replacement.. Yeah Haines is out of reach now. Honestly, I'm not sure how competent a coach we can get. We're the bottom end of the MAC, and the MAC is the bottom end of FBS and on it's way to oblivion. It'd have to be a guy VERY confident in his ability to win big reasonably quickly and make a big enough splash he can move on in 4 years or less. Any longer than that he'd be kinda stuck. Florida or Florida St could offer Cignetti a bottomless pot of gold and an insane NIL program if they want to come after him. But, both schools continue to make bad hires and can't get out of their own way. (Florida St. will probably target Deion and that'll bring its's own set of crazy. But he'd get players.) Not sure Cignetti is sexy enough for the top P5 programs who want glitz and glitter and name recognition. But he just wins and if he wants to make another move at this stage of his career some school with a lot of money will come after him. Hell, who can even tell anymore with all the insane conference realignments and trash hires the big name programs have been making. No clue what UCLA is doing. There's an arrogance at that level that leads donors to think they know who should lead a program and the money talks and a lot of fails happen. We'll see if Mitchell can get us out of our own way when he makes his hire.

I figured you guys were just upset and exaggerating about the defense. But then I browsed the box score. I see JMU scored a touchdown on EVERY POSSESSION except the ones at the ends of the halves. That's really incredible. You could randomly pick eleven nursing home residents and they could do that well. You would think a defender might trip and fall in front of the ball carrier and stop them on third down at least one time. But I guess that assumes getting them to third down. I realize that JMU is pretty good, but I see they are ranked in the 40's or 50's somewhere. It's not like they are the Burrow/Jefferson/Chase LSU offense or something.
Carry on.

Sherm, you actually are the next coach. You know how to freaking use the ground game to great advantage and really set the college football world on fire and burn it all down. Screw defense, you're incredibly aggressive on getting the team on the move offensively. March on oh you Cardinals. March to the sea!

Not that a change in approach might not help at the margin, but that is offset by the transition costs, it would only make sense if we were hiring a coach in waiting, who might bring in a new staff right away for the off season. .
The changes we made off season, we didn't have any great confidence due to the number of new players. Before putting in a new coach with a new system to try to get a turn around, I'd try the Calhoun 100K option. At least we'd get straight answers when things blew up in any given game. Rob 's coach speech would probably be just one work in progress we'd enjoy.
