Ouch. Little Ray did not have his 10 day contract renewed by Memphis today as well.

He has a lot of strengths as a coach, he will be OK. I don't see him ever getting to the top tier, but this is a tough business with a lot of very very good coaches competing. There are a lot of good coaches who don't get to the top.

I must disagree I think Ray will have a hard time getting a head coaching job in D 1. If he is willing to move down and accept less money he can be a head coach below D 1. If not his most likely position will be as an assistant at D 1 school if he is strictly after money he may be able to be an NBA assistant if he knows a lot of coaches there.

We agree I think, not disagree.
Maybe, like Buckley, be better off as an assistant at a high level school.

I, too, disagree. After leaving Ball State Ray has shown that he is only a mediocre coach. His combined record at Houston and Detroit is 174-205. I don't see many schools that want mediocrity. He, like Buckley and Taylor, would be good assistants.

I am surprised that someone hasn't speculated about Ray returning to Muncie already. Just remember,''you can't go home''. He will resurface as an assistant at a decent D-1 program somewhere for a couple of years and then probably get a MAC type job somewhere.

Assistant at mid major is a significant step down. He can do better.
But, the prospect of going from there back to a HC job would not be likely, it will be hard to get to a MAC HC job from assistant at a MAC type school with a middling resume as head coach in the past.
What I am more than a little surprised at is he did not maintain his success at Detroit Mercy, but he made the tourney last in 2012. Seemed a pretty good fit on paper. The fact is Detroit Mercy got pretty good talent, and he had a good staff. Ray was potentially at a place something like Charlie Cole at Miami, maybe, needed to win his share of titles in a pretty competitive league for his school, might be a career coach there. Ray's program makes money at UDM, draws fans. No football, he is paid well, another school a bit like Bradley, a notch above BSU/ MAC schools financially, but not really a better conference.
Don't know the whole story there, so I looked at their fan forum to seen if it revealed anything. Ironically for Ray's fans here who were upset he left, the fan forum reflects not only severe displeasure for a couple of years of mediocre performance, and being beat by local rival Oakland U but they want more of a Detroit man.
Strangely, given his record and especially for those of us here who admire Ray's recruiting skills the fan forum discussion includes preference for several coaches known for recruiting and not strong at X's and O's. I can't really tell, but there is some concern about a star player who may leave and Ray pays the price of recruiting a star and hoping he leads you to the promised land. Also, according to the fan forum, may have made the mistake of employing a very good assistant coach who may be a candidate to replace him. Looks like UDM fans may want to try to get a series of up and coming coaches and suffer the up's and downs that will probably bring.
College basketball is sometimes very strange and fans have pretty unrealistic expectations, and often don't understand how well off they are. How anyone expects UDM to be a perennial NCAA tourney and Horizon League champion seems is a little bit of a mystery to me. They have a good history in their league in the past, but their conference is not as good anymore and fans do not seem to recognize past glory in a different era might not be so easy to replicate.
Even though they are without a football program and can pay the reported 475K a year to Ray, the expectation to dominate the league and get to the NCAA every year, seems more than a little optimistic. Sure it's not that good a conference, but the school is hardly a destination school. It is in freaking Detroit, and is not exactly Brigham Young or Notre Dane or even BC. That kind of unrealistic fan expectation thing can never happen here of course...

My thought on Detroit basketball is they overrate their program's prestige. The average Detroit fan thinks they can easily recruit there especially with Detroit kids. They won't accept losses to Oakland. They feel if Valparaiso could win McCallum should be able to win right with them. Drew is a better coach than Ray and has done an excellent job with his overseas players. We will see what happens but I do not see Valpo dropping off as long as Drew is the head coach. I also think Oakland's suburban location is a better draw for locals than Detroit's location.

I worked in the Motor City for years and lived in the Oakland area for a couple. I'd much rather walk to class at Oakland university than drive down the street at Detroit Mercy.....
Ray might actually be relieved.
