Another disappointing finish has forced me to speak up on this matter. This is division one baseball, not the local little league. I attended multiple games the last couple of years and saw the same thing...a father (our division one coach) playing his son at a position/positions that he did not belong. Clear favoritism on a division one baseball team. This is not little league. There is no place for this!
I met several parents at these games, and the story was the same. The son did not deserve what he was getting. In EVERY game I witnessed, the kid made an error or boneheaded play. I don't blame the kid, I'm sure he is giving his best. If the parents were vocal to a stranger, what do you think the team was thinking? Our coach clearly lost the team by the season end performance, and I can't help but wonder if this was the self destructive factor. Again, this is division one baseball, not your local little league. Enough is enough. Who is going to step up and correct this petty thought process, our AD? Someone needs to have the guts to intervene, before we go thru another season of little league mentality and disappointment.
I have been attending the ACC tourney, wanting to represent Cardinal colors. After that implosion, I am too embarrassed.

I am limited in commenting as I live to far away to attend any games. Your comments made me wonder if Coach Maloney's younger son Nicholas was also going to be playing for the Cardinals next season. I thought Alex pitching was a case of them not wanting to use another pitcher but it appears you felt he skipped over the other pitchers to play Alex there right? That certainly changes my thinking on that.

That certainly changes my thinking on that. BSU has some banged up pitchers. Coach put Alex on the mound to rest some folks. He only had two appearances on the mound for 1-1/3 innings. His fielding pct. was .922, rather low, but usually the SS is one of the lowest, along with the catcher. The team had 62 errors on the season, 17 came from Alex. But Alex batted .305 (4th on team); OBP was .399 (5th on team); slugging was .408 (4th among regulars). Can't tell what is RISP was, but he had 32 RBIs (tied for 4th), and was 3rd in BBs. I am not sure why CardinNC is knocking Alex Maloney. Sure, the fielding could be better, but he is an offensive leader on the team. Not sure what happened with the team chemistry, but it seemed to begin to pull apart after the 4-3 IU loss.

Heard a couple interviews on the radio and some of the other players praised Alex so who knows

The IU loss is exactly where things went south. They were never the same mentally. Maybe there's a better option at SS. Maybe not. But as 12 just laid out, the hitting production is there. There will always be butt hurt parents in every sport no matter what.

I do not know Alex and wish only the best for him long term. The players like him...fantastic. What else can they say publicly? I hope he is a great kid. Is the first month or the last month of the season more important? 1) Batting average dropped 41 points in the last month. 2) As you stated 17 errors, most on the team. By more than double of anyone else. The shortstop should have the best hands on the field. Yes they have more opportunities. Give me a solid, consistent shortstop with no bat any day. 3) Batted in the top 4 slots all year. After his average dropping off a cliff like that? 4) Eye test..former player and coach here. He is not a shortstop. Better way to get pro looks yes. Not a shortstop. This is an eye test conducted over two years as they played on the road. 5) Crunch time hits (two out rbi's etc..). Didn't see any. I admit, only 10-12 games. Small sampling. 6) Pitching, another way to get pro looks. 1 1/3 inning over 6 era. I'm sure his perfomance is not the only reason for the skid. It takes a collective effort. But clearly inside issues affected the chemistry and caused the slide of the MAC West champions. To lose two straight and score 1 run in the tourney, unacceptable. I have a problem with the attitude "I'm the coach so my kids going to play, at shortstop, and bat in the top 4, and pitch, mentality". Another son coming in? Clean this up now. I hope Alex works and becomes a future MLBer. As of now, I don't see it and I don't see the justification on where he is being played. All of the parents I spoke to had nice things to say about Maloney and why they chose Ball State. Everyone of them, talked to at different times over two years and not knowing the other conversations, felt extremely disappointed with what was going on and how it was affecting the team.

I dont know but our pitching was so bad that maybe we needed to keep our best offensive options out there to have any chance. Would any of the other kids have beaten his offensive numbers over an extended time period?

For your digestion. Looks to me like the pitching was above average in the MAC But, like so many statistics, it does not have much use in this discussion. Season stats would be very good in hitting, but not the last week or so. Pitching was not at all good after the injury and certainly not in the final weeks, excepting some good work out of the bull pen and tailed off after the injury to the top pitcher.

Walks and errors were a killer this year. And to have the most balks? There's a lacking of technical proficiency there. Our fundamentals just weren't good enough this year. And the last 3rd of the season we quit getting key hits. It all adds up to a crash and burn.
