I was looking for some better understanding about the women's team, the new Coach and the lack of early success.
I always felt like we were a pretty solid program but now wondering what is up?
Are these early opponents really tough? A little insight from those much closer to the program would be appreciated.
I am not trying to be facetious as I really don't know and try and follow from a distance as best I can.

Fort Wayne TourneyYoungstown State | 2-5 |
| Murray State | 3-3 | | IPFW | 2-4 | (1-2 against MAC) |
IUPUI 2-5 (Two wins over MAC) Omaha TourneyOmaha | 2-6 | (Were 0-4 when they played BSU) | Drake | 6-2 |
| South Dakota | 6-1 |
|
A combined 23-26 FW Tourney was a poor showing against some poor competition. Our closest loss was to Murray State who went 30 in tourney and hasn't won since (west coast tourney) IUPUI has only won against MAC schools (West Division). NIU top team in west. Omaha Tourney was much better competition, but should've won first match. In normal years, this team should be 3-4 or 4-3. The new coach is well liked, but I'm not seeing results.

It's her first year as a head coach and she's experiencing growing pains while also dealing with an incredibly young roster. I don't think anyone on here would argue the fact that Steve left the shelves pretty bare on his way out. One returning senior and 6 incoming freshman, most of whom are receiving some form of playing time.
That's not to excuse any of the losses, especially the ones where they've won 2 sets and couldn't close it out, that's on coach and team. I'm still looking forward to seeing the future of this program, but this year isn't going to be pretty in terms of record, but solid improvement from the freshmen and sophomores throughout the year is what I'll be watching for. You catch glimpses in each game, where you see the kind of team they're capable of becoming, they just have to put it together for 3 sets, which has so far eluded them.

Got it and thanks for the comments as the crystal is much clearer now!

well liked and successful don't always go hand in hand
Shondell abruptly leaving and leaving the cupboard so bare we can't beat poor competition?
None of this has ever smelled right to me about the WVB situation. I hope Sandy isn't looking at this as "enough said" but, sadly, I'm not sure that is the case.

Remember the Marconi hire for baseball? Gaahhh....just spit up a bit in my mouth. Exactly. Dude wasn't ever ready to be an HC at Ball State. That hire was a TC special. I hope Kelli is not going to turn out the same way. I do have much higher hopes for her than I did Marconi. TC passed over some really good candidates to make that safer, cheaper hire. Kablooie.

Every time I think about being critical of Mahoney, I think of those two years. We had quite a good program built up (even with sub-par facilities) until then.

I say we give her 2 seasons as head coach. Maybe there will be noticeable improvement come MAC play. But even so, we are losing to teams that we just don't lose to.

I agree about giving her time. Conversely, the MAC coaches thought enough of our returning talent and recruits to vote us 3rd in the preseason poll despite Steve leaving. Yet we're 0-8 against teams we traditionally beat, so what are the prospects for winning any MAC matches where the teams are tougher? We are surprisingly bad. Going .500 I could understand, but winless so far??

None of this has ever smelled right to me about the WVB situation. I hope Sandy isn't looking at this as "enough said" but, sadly, I'm not sure that is the case. The finger pointing at Coach Shondell is unwarranted. You can't fault him for leaving if you know the reason. Player turnover is never simple problem and I doubt that it is according to plan or what anybody quite wanted. Fair enough criticism. But. As somebody said above, there was enough talent there the MAC coaches voted us to be 3rd in preseason poll. With a coaching turnover. Coach Shondell when he was planning to be back, and everyone else, justifiably expected far better than we are seeing. However your sense of smell enters into the picture, we are seeing a new coach struggle. Fair enough to be upset, we all are. Blaming coach, past coach and AD for suspected but unspecified offenses without being specific and having a basis is not the way to say "I am upset." Everybody is concerned, and I would guess it will be a tough call for the AD if the new coach doesn't get it going this year in a way we can see us headed back to our expected place at the top next year. I am not relying on my nose to make the call, nor do I hint or pretend to know what will happen.

I don't think you understood the point of my comment. I've always been a supporter of Steve and the "?" at the end of my statement was the indication that I wasn't of the opinion that Shondell had left the cupboard bare. Sorry that you couldn't pick up on that and had to write a couple of paragraphs to explain your inner knowledge.
