Happy for him but painful to watch. Ball State mention.

He destroyed Nd on the drive. We did get the “ball state transfer” reference.

He played great. He was a tough loss. He is a game breaker. We could have used him.

I remember when Damon transferred and someone posted here that he'd inferred that part of his reason for leaving (not the main part, but part nonetheless) was that he didn't think we had a QB who could consistently get the ball downfield to him.
After yesterday's game vs NIU I'm inclined to think that might be true.

When Riley is pressured he’s just not good enough. Even some of the throws where he had time were wild. He does make you wonder if there was an issue with his arm or shoulder yesterday with everything sailing high.

All who seem to be in the know (watch practice, spring game, etc.) say repeatedly that Neal can make all the throws but it doesn't show under the pressure of a game. If this ability hasn't been seen up until now why would it suddenly appear this season? I was hoping that the competition brought in this year might focus Riley more but it appears that is not the case. It seems he just doesn't have ''it''. The ''it'' Davis and Wenning had. Of course he is not surrounded by the quality teammates the previous QBs experienced. So the bottom line is I don't have a clue and now that I think about it I don't know why I wrote this.

Great question isn't it.
IT is hard to separate from results, making plays and winning. Which does depend on a lot of variables. Includes leadership and perhaps SOMETHING else?
Is there something separate from those better defined variables?
Maybe. Great leadership helps others achieve, the ability they have, for example.
Pretty large element that is random. Hard to say how much, how little. You can give yourself the best odds, but the shot doesn't fall, the defender makes a great or lucky play.
No IT then.
While if the ball bounces the other way you have IT.

I think if Ball State still had Hazelton that Neal would have "it." His success depends on the players around him. Yesterday was just an off day for him. He has been much better in previous weeks.

I'd just prefer to look at all the better defined variables before I come to a conclusion about most of the intangible.
But any discussion of success has to include an elusive element of synergy, things just work better together than expected, sometimes a team just clicks, and ..............then there is also serendipity.

Miller is a good possession type receiver and Lacanaria and Hall are decent slot receivers. We just do not have anyone who can stretch a defense or gain separation. I'm sure they would love for Tyler to be that guy but from what I saw Saturday he does not run very good routes. Riley had a bad day. When he has time he usually delivers the ball to the correct guy accurately. His deep balls have been better this year as well. I think there are times where he'd like to step up into the pocket but the center seems to cave and he has to spin out to try to buy some time or find a lane to run but there is nowhere to go. Bottom line is we need better line play and a young receiver to step up.

Spot on. Tyler indeed has trouble with route running. Doesn’t always run what he’s supposed to. If he can mature and get better at detail he’ll be really good. Same with Newton. (If they stick around)
We have a back up center playing to allow the normal starter to slide over to cover for injuries.

Kaleb Slaven is listed as questionable for Saturday. Maybe he isn't that far from returning.
