Mixed feelings on the Akron website; time will tell on the hire. Some are receptive, some not so much and such is the MAC: ie: Neg Response: "This hire does nothing for me. I don't get the excitement to hire him. He took over a program that had 10, 9 & 9 wins the three years prior to him and turned that into 3 and 5 wins in his two years. In his second year at the helm he never beat any of the top four teams in his league. Is that the success we want? I would love to know what LW saw in him that was better than Getsy or Kehres. He's our coach now and I'll do all I can to help him be successful, but pardon me if I'm not excited". (Getsey reference was to former Akron QB, Luke Getsey, now coaching at Miss. St, I believe; Kehres is the HC at Mount Union). Pos Response: "Good Hire. Young local guy who grew up and played in Northeast Ohio. Should be able to recruit. Zips needed a young energetic coach to hopefully take us to the next level of competing yearly for MAC championships" zipsnation.org/forums/topic/38181-welcome-tom-arth/

I would think it’s tough to hire a “heard of” coach in the MAC in this era.....unless he’s a “on the way back down” coach. Even those guys have enough connections or latch onto an assistants job somewhere.
MAC schools have to roll the dice and hope to strike gold and, if they do, they get to roll the dice again in 2-3 years.

All that rolling the dice increases the cost of hiring bad coaches 50-100% if you include the budget for buyouts.

At least he has college head coaching experience at the D1 level. It is a significantly less risky hire than Mike Neu was.
He was 40-8 at John Carroll in the OVC and 9-13 at Chattanooga. He's 49-21 overall as a head coach.

My guess is he came to the interview with a written detailed plan on exactly how he wants to build a sustainable program, not just put teams on the field. At least that's the way I would have approached it.

He is a cleveland Guy.. He has st ignatios glenville etc.. Then in akron/Canton he has mckinnley, hobart, greene. Then there is cinci where there is another 5 great teams.. Not to mention Columbus.. There are 10-15 warren centrals within three hours. All he has to do is recruit Ohio

That's still hard. A lot of good schools recruit Ohio. I can't see Cincy as all that favorable a place anyway. It's maybe Columbus and North of there. And MSU and UM will hit Northern Ohio hard. Not to mention all the MAC schools.
He'll have to recruit outside Ohio.

I’m sure he’ll figure it out. Bet he has Akron in bowl shape quickly.

That is tough task but if he is good not impossible. Sure we he will leave the state but he would not have too. There are so many MAC caliber players in Ohio its silly. Ohio High school football is traditionally some of the best HIgh school football in the nation. If your Akron, Kent or BG 70% of your roster should be Ohio. Toledo 60% but they have reached a point as a program they can go out of state for good players.. Miami of Ohio hits southern Ohio and Indiana hard. We as a program need to stop Miami from getting MAC recruits we are after.. They are picking off good players from us

I am not so sure, Recruiting In State All Stars might not be the best strategy.
