Several sources reporting Hammock to take over at Northern; so, an NFL assistant returning to alma mater=instant success or something (kindly insert sarcasm emoji here, if you wish).
"Northern Illinois is hiring Baltimore Ravens running backs coach Thomas Hammock as its next head coach, a source told ESPN.
Hammock, a former star running back for NIU who later served as a Huskies assistant coach, will be introduced Friday at news conferences in both DeKalb, Illinois, and Chicago. He coached running backs at NIU in 2005 and 2006 and also held posts at Minnesota and Wisconsin before joining the Ravens in 2014. This will be his first head-coaching position.
SMU defensive coordinator Kevin Kane, who held the same position at NIU before joining the Mustangs in 2018, was a finalist for the job, according to sources. NIU also spoke with Indiana State head coach Curt Mallory, NIU offensive coordinator Mike Uremovich, Wisconsin offensive coordinator Joe Rudolph and others about its coaching vacancy.
Hammock, 37, takes over for Rod Carey, who last week left to become head coach at Temple..."

How far down has the MAC fallen when it loses a head coach of one of the better teams to Temple - a team that left the MAC and still has yet to beat a MAC team with a wining record!

It pays better than the MAC although without Cosby's money how long will the money last.

I see your point with the comparisons to Neu, but there is one major difference - he was an assistant at NIU, and understands the importance of and challenges with recruiting. I'd also say that NIU's commitment level compared to ours makes a significant difference. Finally, Hammock was a true position coach, as to where Neu was mostly a scout (yes, he was technically QB coach his last year or two, but I've heard that wasn't really much of a coaching role at all). The wild card is that Hammock has never been a head coach before.

Yet I bet Hammock continuing the tradition of winning up there.
