With the coming change to the college three point line, I did a quick look at how the Cardinals stack up statistically in this category.
The fan board has been very critical of Cardinal performance in this category.
Due to laziness and a minuscule attempt at comparing apples/apples, I only looked at the last 5 years (WhitYears) and only looked at “in-conference” stats. I wanted to see just how awful our team might be with the 3-pointer difficulty increased for 2019-2020.
MAC 3FG % Stats (2014-2019)
Ball State Cardinals .346 BSU MAC Opponents .358 Total MAC Teams .343
Looks like we are middle-of-the-pack over the long haul. It does show that we are less-than-average at 3FG defense.

This change will be huge for the Cards. To begin with our 3P FG defense will improve (along with everyone else's). But the big improvement will be with Zach Gunn, as this moves the line to more within the range of his natural stroke. It's clear he's been too close to the basket these past couple of years.

But will it increase or decrease Teague's need to jack-up the 3-ball?

We haven't had a shooter that could hit a consistent 18 footer in 30 years... We will be pourin' those 3 pointers this season. NOT! Get real guys. Do you really think we might have a chance to be a success this year. Dream on MOFO.

Dennis Trammel was a shooter from 3 point land...shot better than 43%...graduated like in 2005.

EXCUSE ME! Our most optimistic basketball fan can come up with ONE name in Thirty Years...THIRTY YEARS. He is the exception that proves the rule. The point I was trying to make was our outside game has sucked for decades. If any of you can't see where this coach is taking us AGAIN, WAKE UP AND SMELL THE COFFEE.

Going to make running a pack line defense all the more difficult.

I am a fan of the 3 ball and of teams that utilize screening for good shooters. Totally agree we have not had enough outside shooting, said so repeatedly. In my mind a much bigger problem than lack of a post up center, for example. We failed in having enough shooting last year, for sure, just didn't have go to guy to look for once Mallers lost his touch, and with Persons having the ball so much.
Where this thread has surprised me a bit is I didn't realize Whit had been coaching for decades, and we could blame him as much. And my memory is that in his "decade" he's had a couple of teams shoot pretty well from outside, and a number of good shooters (perhaps not great). Weber and Sellers hit a lot of 3's and Francis was dangerous.

Going to make running a pack line defense all the more difficult. I don't understand why. The change should encourage more need to score mid range and drive to the basket. 3pfg% should decrease.
You have a point that the pack line concept has run afoul of good outside shooting big men and has been harder to execute with more 3 ball. I think the current line has made that tough anyway. Forces us to stretch the defense out and take away the help in the middle. Unless you have a couple of very good athletes to get out on shooters, and still be able to recover and help, have more need to contain them on the dribble. All areas where we have not been strong. This has to be a area where we play a little differently with or without the rules change.

Because offenses will be more spread out and covering driving lanes will be more difficult. How is that hard to understand ?

I think a bigger problem is we have guys who can't create from the outside and won't attempt the three unless they are wide open. Mallers will put-up a step back off the dribble but he is only one.

Huh? Whitford HASN'T been coaching for decades? It sure seems like he has. Let me check.
Well, how about that? The records show that 00 is actually right! But I those of us who thought Whitford has been around for decades can, I think, be forgiven because the same PATTERN has been going on for decades: We get a coach who doesn't win much of anything, but we have a coterie of jock-sniffing "supportive" fans who keep telling us said coach is building the program and will be contending for a championship, one of these days real soon, and we need to be sure and keep him. Then they smoothly shift over to saying we can't get rid of the coach because we can't afford to buy out the contract (that they were in favor of extending).

The '14-'15 season was an eternity. Is an eternity longer than a decade?
