Please enlighten me because I don’t understand or know the answer. It is often discussed here about the awful players Coach Neu inherited. What confuses me is that if they were so bad, why didn’t the staff start replacing them immediately. When reading game articles over the last couple of years it appears most of the players named were from the prior regime. In fact I believe I read on this board that some had transferred or left the program. So, I assume they would still be involved. I believe that usually, a new coach would start to replace personnel with his own players to turn the program around, if the ones he inherited were inferior.

Well the easy answer would be how many freshman and or sophomores do you really want playing. Unless the kid is a complete stud the holdovers are still going to have a couple years head start in the weight room and just being around FBS football. There is a huge difference in an 18 year old freshman and a 21 year old JR.. Now that Neus guys are RS Jr and a few seniors from the first mixed class we have too see something. Everyone knows that this years results will determine Neus Fate. Whats really scary is that this years class is shaping up much like the last couple of the previous staff. A couple pretty good recruits at the top but when you get past that its a bunch of one offer kids. We could just see the cycle repeat itself..

When reading game articles over the last couple of years it appears most of the players named were from the prior regime. You might have figured out why the current staff is on the hot seat. Yep. You are stuck with the last recruiting class from the previous regime for the most part because it’s late in the game so there’s one year. Years two and 3 you work in your own new recruits if they are worthy of hitting the field but the previous regime’s players are now the vets and so the best of those players are still on the field but they still aren’t true competitive MAC quality players, so you still struggle. Year 4 you hope your recruits are matured and now ready to win while mixed in with the previous regimes handful of good players. Etc etc. Now take A look at Lembo. He worked in reverse. He did a damned good job with Stan/Brady recruits right off the bat, but once those guys graduated and good staff left, well, down we went and there was no truly solid foundation of players left. And here we are.

Lembo and staff were probably fine in utilizing talent.
What the story is about their recruiting is a bit puzzling. They had success, more than expected with talent in place. Would have expected to cash in on that even if there was a year or so to make transition establish a presence.
That transition is harder than fans think. A 2 year contract is silly for that reason.
Maybe we started losing assistants at that critical time. Budget really hurts us with retention of staff.
