So decent offense and shaky D... The Norm.. Offensively was it the same or did we mix up the play calling more

My impression is the defense can not apply pressure which means any more wins are shoot outs. Plitt is able to lead us to scores but he will give up a number of interceptions. Coaches are no better. Those of us on this board are not going to be happy in all liklihood at the end of the season.

So decent offense and shaky D... The Norm.. Offensively was it the same or did we mix up the play calling more We had trouble running effectively early, so that helped Plitt get in a groove passing. Had a couple nice deep balls for td’s to Hall and Miller. Fletcher caught a lot of passes too. Shared the ball well in the passing game. I think 11 different players had a reception? Littles even caught a pass! Dunner MIA again offensively. Fletcher is too good to not be on the field most of the game is my takeaway. Defensively we were vanilla. Didn’t blitz a ton but we never really do. CJ had another INT. Red Potts played more today and looked decent.

Vanilla ''D'', doesn't bother me at this point of the season. Why show any future teams that we play anything when we didn't need them against this team? Let's surprise them down the line with something they haven't seen on film.

I have no complaints about the offense. We should be good in that area all year.
The defense will have to be better if Neu wants to keep his job.
Very impressed with the punter this year. 50 yard bombs every time.

Fletcher is a huge surprise! Plitt is looking good. The punting game is awesome. The defense, well ‘nough said.

It's probably and unfair and inaccurate assessment, but ...
I just got the feeling we won today because we had better athletes across the board.
If the athletes had been the same on both sides of the ball and we had to rely on preparation, on play-calling, on better execution ... I'm not sure what the outcome would have been.
Not sure that bodes well for the rest of the season, but maybe we didn't spend a lot of time actually prepping for Fordham. I hope we didn't.

I was never worried even down 14-7. I can't put my finger on why they are blah. O-line, D-line, Secondary.....I am rooting so hard for Mike Neu but I think he is looking for a neu job next year.

I was never worried either, but I was/am concerned. I can’t see how we’ll compete well with anybody the rest of the way with that defense and that oline. Plitt looks really good. Miller looked good. Fletcher looks really good. But we flat cannot run between the tackles (but we kept trying, fail as we might). The defense got pushed around at times by what should have been a smaller less athletic team. Fau is VASTLY superior to Fordham and I bet could beat Iu. And Meanwhile Buffalo is up on Penn St.

And yes we could have used Gilbert this year. He’s been great for Kansas St.

'08, I hope that our defense does not suck. Neu has had three years to recruit and strengthen that half of our team. We will see soon if the cream will rise to meet the challenge, because if it does not, as you might think, we will be firing Neu and starting from scratch. If that takes place, the question is, what kind of coach AND STAFF can we attract.

If that takes place, the question is, what kind of coach AND STAFF can we attract. It's hard to imagine we can find a coach at our price point who can bring a bargain basement staff in and start from scratch and not regress for a year or two.
Using the players we would be able to retain from the previous regime and do it better is the key to a rebuild, it is almost never a true rebuild.

I think if Neu is fired we would regress much more than a year or two. That is the reason I am hoping we show a vast improvement over the past so we can continue to climb this very steep hill.

Which means an AD will consider something less than a vast improvement as enough improvement when deciding to cut or retain. We'll be hiring another bargain coach and a new staff. Hard to retain good players and even a miracle recruiting class is a year away at best.
You are right it is a very steep hill rarely accomplished on a shoestring budget.
The Sherman "2 year and out" Plan of gambling on an unknown is really hard to justify in Football, where player development is slow and recruiting classes rarely make instant impact. Especially true when considering the need for this unknown coach to assemble a good staff to do both. Not only do you need to strike gold with this gambling hire, but you are asking those assistants to all gamble their career on that unknown coach without a track record of success.
