Ok, we dug in like hell on defense and everyone knows it!
This was a big big win against the preseason favorite!
We just may open the MAC 3-0!

Not that 4k is a great number but it really is these days 4707 That's a pretty good non-student crowd, and for once we didn't let them down when they showed up.

The GOOD....defense saved us tonight, second unit played hard, Ish is by far our best player, not even close. Mallers played like a senior. Nice crowd got into the game.
The BAD...no KJ or Acree, must be injuries, too many turnovers, Teague threes, terrible start.
The UGLY...dumb plays out of several timeouts, too many one on one plays, Toledo’s coach at the end trying to psych out Bumbalough. He hit em both so Kowalcyzk can suck it!
Overall a sloppy win but it’s still a win so we will gladly take it. Gotta take better care of the ball though. El Amin looks like an All MAC player right now.

Anyone see Coleman and one of toledos assistants going face to face

When Bumb was at the line for the 1 and 1 with 9 seconds left Kowaldick started screaming “He’s only shooting 30% from the line!” Over and over. He was trying to get in his head. It was a dick move and I’m glad Bumb hit em both.

The UGLY...dumb plays out of several timeouts, too many one on one plays, Toledo’s coach at the end trying to psych out Bumbalough. He hit em both so Kowalcyzk can suck it! It was a physical game against a big team. Team defense and help was mostly good. Teague was very active. Mallers covered a lot of ground, cut off their ball screening. We really pressured their game the first half. They tried more inside out isolation the second half but we recovered to their shooters, and fought for position better than I expected against that size.
We had a game plan to drive on them. Even Mallers was going to the bucket...Teague's 3 pga efforts may not have just been his own whimsy, but part of an attempt to get the big guy out on the floor. That failed, but we managed to get enough isolation on their slow footed defense and created some turnovers. Toledo defended better second half.
The unforced errors really hurt. Some out of the TO so really painful.
KJ and Acree unable to play forced us to use Kroft and use Josh a little more than was perfect. But I'll both some credit for good active D and floor game.
Coleman did not look big in the box score but I continue to be impressed with him on both ends of the floor. Bumbalough has adjusted pretty well, hurried a 3 on occasion, but he scrappy, not a huge loss on defense. Mallers was solid hit a few big shots, forced Toledo to shadow him. Ish isn't flashy but has grown up a lot in a year.

It was a dick move and I’m glad Bumb hit em both. He was focused like his good games in HS at the end. He is doing well and will find better rhythm on his shots. Will be solid by end of the year, every game is a lesson and growth. All game he was working very hard on D, showed a little of the FB toughness. To bad he isn't the size of Persons, he'd be all around better than TP.

If we were just an average (instead of below average) passing team I think we could be very good in conference. Too many times we jump in the air to pass or try to fit low bounce passes into a crowded post on a break. Cleaning up these bone headed plays I think nets us +10 ppg.
Loved the defense tonight. I think I saw a stat that said we lead the league in defense in terms of ppg allowed? If we stay at or near the top in that category I think we have a chance to be a top contender. We’re gonna need that defense especially on poor shooting nights. I was glad to see us score a decent amount on slashing to the basket. Mallers, Ish, and Coleman in particular in that regard.
Lastly, I think we can survive off nights by Teague offensively if he stays engaged defensively throughout. Not sure if the matchup with Knapke had his fires clicking or not but I thought he held his own tonight against him. I was anticipating Teague making a dumb foul after every ill-advised 3, but I don’t recall him doing that. He ran right back down to get position and guard. Hopefully he keeps this mindset next game and for the rest of the season.

Really nice start to the conference season. Maybe we just have Toledo's number, because I don't get the love they and their coach seem to get from others. Then, again I don't watch many other MAC games so maybe they just kill everyone else.
Really pretty nice games by the vets: Ish, Taj, Mallers.
Decent games from the youngsters: Agree with Rob that Bum's D probably not as much of a liability, and he really seemed quick to a lot of loose balls today. Coleman drove me little nuts tonight, a mix of good and bad but I'll take little of that from a RS-Frosh, and he seems to have a nice fire about him.
Some nice contributions off the bench tonight from Hazen and Josh; Kroft at least didn't seem to hurt us. But surely a 8-deep roster won't get us through the conference season. Better hope KJ and Acree are available or we'll be done by the halfway mark. Right?
4,700 attendance is a pretty nice number. With students we might have broken 5,000. Might.
I'd say until they can sell 5,000 tickets, they might as well keep that kids get in free promotion going. Better than empty seats.
