I watched portions of both the ISU/Iowa & UK/IU games & the number of hit batters was horrible. I realize lots of teams are using it as a part of their offense. ISU had 10 hit batters & UK 9. My opinion is it lengths the game & no one wants to go watch players get hit. ( most make little attempt to get out of the way) So I think you simply no longer give them a free base it's just a ball.

Yes get out of the way if not put the batter on second instead of first.

It mostly happens when pitchers get tired and their curveball just spins straight

Pitchers never want to throw down the middle. They attempt to pitch the edges, especially inside where you can jam a hitter.
In today's game the hitters come to the plate armored up. They have shin and elbow guards on. They crowd the plate to have better control over the outside corner, but mainly are challenging the pitcher to throw that inside pitch. They are told not to budge. Take the contact.
If it doesn't hurt because you are armored up, why not take the contact. Before the elbow guard, hitters would move because the elbow is pretty fragile.
