This year's team is odd in that its most impressive efforts are all losses. In my view, the most encouraging games thus far have been the competitive losses to fairly the good teams, ISU, Minnesota, Akron and Toledo. KenPom sees things the same way - the reasonably close loss at Toledo actually raised us 6 spots up his rankings. Make no mistake, we have a bad team but these four efforts keep me from writing it off as all-out terrible. Conversely, we have zero impressive wins. At the time, the win against ODU seemed pretty impressive, but ODU has since proven to be quite a bad team and has fallen down to a #267 ranking. The other wins have come against teams that are truly God awful terrible. To round out the picture, we have a couple really ugly non-competitive losses to the terrible teams UALR and Central. It's a strange package of results, all in all. Mostly, but not entirely, dismal.
The schedule now lightens up considerably with a heavy sprinkling of games against the dregs of the MAC....and they are some appalling dregs indeed. We won't play another game against a team as good as the four impressive losses I listed above. What does all this portend? F--- if I know.
The remaining interest in this season is - will we or won't we be one of the four teams left out of the MAC tourney? 0-4 is an excellent start for that but it could still be easily avoided by simply beating the bloc of shitty MAC teams currently ranked below us. On the other hand, Lewis may have cleverly hit on a way to avoid the continual MAC tourney failure of his predecessors.

Yes kid, that's the more concise version.

In the forum's pre-conference poll, I had us at 9-9, but that included a 1-4 start to MAC play. We could be right there still with a win at EMU.
No way we're a great team, or even a good one, by any means, but possibly still a middle-of-the-road MAC team. The Toledo and Akron games were at least more encouraging than the CMU game.
I was also shocked by the attendance at the Akron game. It was about double what I might have expected during the Whitford years. Maybe Lewis isn't fielding a better team, but possibly his colorful sideline demeanor is pulling in a few onlookers. Maybe it's just NASCAR-type fans waiting for the next wreck, but I guess it's butts in seats.

Yes we suck but so does the league. Kent, Toledo & Ohio were much better a yr ago than now. I think the team is already worn down. A 500 record 16- 16 is as good as we get.

Unless Lewis can fund one or two guys off the bench to give minutes and fouls the team will be worn down mid February if not sooner. Physically and mentally. They are about there mentally now.

Physical and mental are related. I don't see them worn down mentally, and see the end game as more physical and after all these games have been against teams with more talent overall, it isn't some surprise to see those teams get focused at the end and play at a higher level than we can.

Maybe Lewis isn't fielding a better team, but possibly his colorful sideline demeanor is pulling in a few onlookers. all right! Now we are seeing some interesting out of the box thinking for a change! But the Bob Knight imitation act will eventually wear thin. Maybe Lewis has some heretofore unsuspected singing or dancing talents? Maybe he could learn the classic invisible-walls-closing-in mime act? The saw the cheerleader in half bit? Three Stooges style slapstick among the coaching staff? Lewis does bear a certain resemblance to Curly. The clown car gag would be appropriate for our program. The BSU players are introduced by entering the floor via a clown car, the whole team one-by-one gets out of a car that looks like it wouldn't hold half their number. Maybe we've been too fixated on the whole success-through-winning idea.

Sounds like your next homework project should be this…..which mid major team has the highest avg. attendance in the last 20 years w/o going to the NCAA tournament. What would our attendance numbers/program morale look like compared to that team? Or…..are we that team? I have no idea.

I bet their attendance is higher than ours.
