www.jconline.com/story/news/2017/06/28/renovation-plans-announced-loeb-stadium/429349001/This is the home field for some Lafayette Jeff and Central Catholic games, but is the HQ for the Colt World Series and the Prospect League's (Summer Collegiate) Lafayette Aviators. $16 mil marks a substantial investment for a city the size of Lafayette to make for summer college ball. When they demolish the existing stadium in 2019, the Aviators will either have to find a place to play for the 2020 season, or shut the franchise down for one year. Why not propose to the Aviators to use First Merchants Ballpark (we add lights by then) for the single season??? It would give folks and idea as to whether Muncie and ECI would, or could support a summer college ball, or independent minor league team. Why not experiment? Terre Haute (Rex - Prospect), Lafayette (Aviators - Prospect), Kokomo (Jackrabbits - Prospect) and Richmond (Jazz - Great Lakes Summer Collegiate) are all supporting college summer ball programs for entertainment. Why not Muncie?

I have hit a couple of home runs in that ball park. I hit a home run in a legion game that went into the parking lot of the ice cream joint. Always loved playing at loeb and watching my kids play there as well. The renovations look great.

I don't think we would get the Lafayette team to help us with proof of concept. They will need to stay home and work on building their own success, keep those fans happy! The real question is whether it is worth it for BSU to make the investment needed and whether Muncie can support even what Richmond, Kokomo, do. I am not completely clear this has been a good deal for them. It is good for baseball fans, but is there return on the investment? When this topic comes up I just don't see the numbers. Arguably PU and Lafayette are a different situation, PU has a relatively fat budget compared to BSU.

But, I don't think Lafayette will do it. BSU doesn't have much to lose, assuming those lights are in place and assuming our athletic department has the staff to do what is needed. I am not so sure how much information you gain. I am betting the success of the Lafayette team is based on past success there. Being here one year would not be a very good test run. They have had time to build good will and establish a presence in Lafayette, unlikely to be nearly as successful here. Thinking about it, maybe it would be better NOT to have them here on a test and strike out. BSU unless they are all in, would have an uphill battle to make the test run work. Especially if nobody on the staff is really into the idea. I'd say use the existing record and success(assuming it is a success at the other venues mentioned) to sell BSU on the idea without a test run. Plan for the longer run, not a one year gig which is too likely to be screwed up without a commitment to the long run.

The renderings look great. Interesting that they are flipping the layout, with home plate now where deep center used to be. No more dingers will ever go into the Frozen Custard!!
