I do not think anyone really wants that but the reality is we will not or can not give 100% to the football team. We are dead last in facilities, near the bottom budget wise and it does not look like its changing. You can not expect to have a consistently good team with only partial backing. Without football we could afford to go all in on Basketball. I would personally hate to see that happen but its the truth.

We still lose recruits over stuff like an indoor practice facility that would hardly get used. We still have poor support even with the improvements of the last few years. We still lag behind all the other Mac schools in key areas. Some of us are just not convinced the money spent is still worth it, especially knowing the university would have to invest millions more to try to just catch up, let alone rise above the other schools. I don't want to cut football but at some point bsu might have to consider dropping to fcs. At least there's a chance to get in the playoffs there. However, we wouldn't be allowed to stay in the Mac if that happened, so it won't happen unless the Mac as a whole decides to drop down.
As long as massive resources are poured into football the other sports suffer. The slippage of the basketball programs in the league coincides with the increased emphasis on football.

I understand the financial challenges, but I find it both amusing and sad that even our most loyal and supportive football fans think we should cut funding for football and focus on basketball. Personally, I'm way more interested in Ball State football than basketball. That is why I visit this message board, but I know that I'm in the minority.

And by the time we catch up we would just be behind again. We have been behind for so long its now a never ending battle

I love both sports. Realistically though it would be more sustainable to invest more heavily in basketball and more people would care about basketball then they do football. Long term big success in football just doesn't seem sustainable given the cost.

I prefer football as well and I do not think any of the football fans are saying lets cut football. I can only speak for myself but I would hate for that to ever happen. I also have to be honest and look at it objectively though.

Honestly though the NCAA wants and will eventually will get all the smaller conferences forced out. I might not be in the next 10 years but it will happen.

Add me to the group that finds football much more enjoyable than basketball. College football is the best. I agree Mike, this thread doesn't do much to excite me about Ball State Football. I rarely read anything positive on here.
I've been enjoying the daily videos put out with Joel Goedett and ballstatesports. I really do think this offense could be pretty good this year with a loaded backfield. If Neal improves we could have a pretty fun year.

Sigh. This isn't about "negative" and "wanting" football cut. Rob and I love football and would never want it cut. But our heads aren't buried in the sand either to the reality either. At some point the spending will far exceed the return in the current model and isn't sustainable long term. THAT is the issue. At some point the University will have to make some hard decisions. The entire MAC will. (Well, other than WMU, which seems to think it can spend with the Power 5 schools). Rob is right, eventually the Power conferences will split off into their own division, perhaps even outside of the NCAA. Who knows what will happen to the rest of the schools. Maybe we all create a new landscape for our level of programs that is both highly competitive and sustainable.
Until then, I love the youth and talent in the program now. Should be a lot of fun to watch!

I do not know what more I could do myself to promote and try to get people excited about BSU football. It is almost like a second job for me and most would call it obssesive/psychotic and just plain weird. I can not and will not lie about anything though the truth is the truth. As far as the backfield and Riley stepping up your exactly right. We also need the D to come around some also. I really think the future is pretty bright for us it just might take another year

This thread is depressing. Leave it to Ball State fans, the few that we have, to call on their school to cut football on the football message board. Did not say cut football. Join Indiana State in MVC! Though I'd prefer the MAC go to that level in football and focus efforts on basketball. I'd still go to the football games and still have fun in the fall. Attendancee would change for football games and could go up if we win games.

Sigh. This isn't about accepting reality or not. It is a matter of focus and spirit of a fan base. Is it possible that we will have to drop to the FCS due to financial difficulties? Sure. I may even be supportive of that decision. But the fact is that we are two weeks from the start of the 2017 season and our message board is talking about dropping support for the football program. How can we expect to gain more fans when this is the attitude and discussion from the core fans? Do you think this discussion is encouraging to current players or future recruits, some who may visit this site? If you google 'Ball State Message Board' this site is the first thing you see. It's not about accepting reality or not, it's about focus. My focus and interest at this time is supporting this team and looking forward to this season. The future will take care of itself.
Rob - thanks for all that you do to promote the football program. I know you are way more invested than I am.

But, I am tired of weekday games which forces me to watch it at home in NE Indiana versus going to the game. I enjoy seeing us play Indiana State. It's the game I like. It's seeing us win I like. It's a stadium full of fans I like - the season seats are less than half full these days as attendance continue going down. We were not just last in our division, we had dozens of FCS teams better than us. It's sad.

Rob - thanks for all that you do to promote the football program. I know you are way more invested than I am. I AM SUPPORTIVE of Ball State football - a forty year plus season ticket holder and a contributor to the stadium expansion program (I enjoy seeing my name on the plaque on the stadium). I have talked about the need to strongly promote the program - not just two billboards on I-69. Not an occasional state-wide news story. I talk to CVC and athletic department staff, they shake their heads in agreement and continue doing the same thing. Tired of lack of support to the program, a program I have always supported. i have enjoyed a very public position in the communities where I have worked and everyone knows I am a Ball State alum and one of the biggest Cardinal fans they will ever meet. I am excited about this year's football team and think people will be surprised about the results. If the ball goes our was I see 7-8 wins and a bowl game. Go Cards!

To further this point, Western Michigan had an average attendance of 23,000 last year (Waldo seats 30,000). Not to mention that the MAC had the lowest average attendance of all conferences by a sizable margin. The fact is, a vast majority of people in and around schools within the MAC don't give jack-shit about MAC football. Have to agree with the above point. That being said, would it not better to spend less money on football and concentrate our limited resources on basketball - follow Mo-Valley model? Maybe get the MAC and BSU back to its better basketball days? I think Calhoun recently used the term......... "Chicken Dinner!" to characterize your award winning comment 🏁
