Anyone know why he is calling the Detroit game on ESPNU.. Freelance work? Can he do that?

He can do whatever freelance he wants. A lot of people at Ball State do freelance TV work for the sports networks. Most of them are behind the scenes, though.
Joel has been doing some gymnastics broadcasts at EMU the past year or so, along with some other low-key stuff. Last night was definitely the highest level game he's done to this point.
I expect him to move on within a few years, if he can get in good with ESPN or Fox Sports.

Working for cable sports (as a non former athlete) is a pretty dicey career path.
