Average MAC men's basketball home attendance:
1. Ohio - 4960
2. Toledo - 3926
3. Ball State - 3382
4. Akron - 2775
5. Buffalo - 2738
No new faces this year just the same old us. Still good enough for third in the MAC

Not one of these is a figure to be proud of-- at best they represent half- or third-full arenas. OU may be down this season, but has a winning tradition, history of good support and a 13,000 seat building. Toledo, Akron and Buffalo are all urban areas which ought to be able to draw well--Akron has won recently, Buffalo is hands-down the best team in the league. We all know what kind of basketball area we are in. So glad the MAC poured all its athletic resources into promoting weeknight football games no one attends.

Hold on according to this basketball caused the MAC deal
Several years is the short answer. The medium answer is that, according to Steinbrecher, the MAC approached ESPN after Ohio's run to the Sweet 16 in 2012 about renegotiating their TV Contract then (just three years into the deal). The MAC's deal wasn't very good, financially, for the MAC, so it should come as no surprise that the MAC took every opportunity it could to renegotiate and improve its bargaining chips.

Attendance sucks everywhere for both football and basketball just not sure we can blame the MAC or Espn for it especially in basketball.

Why would anyone pay to watch an emotionless team go through the paces and turn in one lousy performance after another? That is not to mention driving for hours in the Hell like conditions.

I really believe at this time BSU playing in Muncie even if ranked could not average 5,000 a game. Let's imagine this team was 16-3 right now I don't think the attendance average would be above 4,000.Student attendance would be little changed & Muncie community support will not change.

I think we'd be over 4,000 if we'd win. Our lowest D1 games have been N. Florida (3,018) and Florida A&M (2,902). Both were while students were off campus and ahead of major holidays where people travel or spend time with family/friends. After the ND win we got 5,009 for Valpo. In conference we've gotten 3,025 (EMU, students off-campus), 3,622 (Buffalo, most students probably still off campus), and 3,702 (CMU). So despite blowout losses to Buffalo and WMU the attendance has still climbed. CMU was the second best attended game of the year. I think if we were actually winning and playing well we'd draw fans from Indy and the doughnut counties and be over 4,000/game. EDIT: and if we were on like a 14 game win streak I think there would be a lot of buzz around campus about it and students would show up better.

"So glad the MAC poured all its athletic resources into promoting weeknight football games no one attends." Is that what it did? Really? That's rash, late-night talking there, sorry. My larger point is when the MAC was peaking as a basketball league, the conference prioritized upgrading the level of its football programs, which was needed. It appears as greater resources were devoted to maintaining D-1 football, chasing third-tier bowl games and "weeknight football games no one attends," (I stand by that statement) that basketball programs and especially non-revenue sports across the league were de-emphasized and have floundered. I can wish schools across the MAC better attendance in all sports, but I don't have an informed opinion or influence in any of those places. I don't know what the long-term solution is in the Muncie area, which has shown students and locals will come out when the teams win BIG, but are largely indifferent otherwise. BSU has only recently embraced marketing the game and facility experience, and the response to "monkey-see, monkey-do" market pricing has been a dud. I think our ticket prices are reasonable for D-1 sports, but I can assure you many don't feel the same way.

I think attendance at Worthen has been a big problem for a long time. Losing doesn't help, but the fact it is so easy to see a game without making the trip to Muncie or walking to Worthen is also responsible for fewer butts in the bleachers. All home games can be viewed on a smart TV or a device. Why make the trip, especially in cold weather?
Go Cards!

RF I basically haven't missed watching a BSU sporting event since we got the ESPN3 deal. So my default is to not make the trip to Muncie unless I'm particularly interested in the game or if it's a trip with friends/family. When the Buffalo game came along I really wanted to go - pre-season East favorite coming to town, 9-game win streak, felt really hyped still from the ND game. Nobody wanted to go with me and I had a lot going on at home, so after a lot of hemming and hawing I just watched on ESPN3. Glad I didn't spend time and money driving to Muncie alone in blistering cold to watch us get hammered. It's really bad for the program if we have fans thinking "it was such a great decision not to have gone to that game." Every time I'm considering going the scales are tipped against it.

RF You need to give people a reason to go, which takes a combination of marketing and product. BSU has sucked at both for years. This is an operation that can't even get ticket lines figured out.

Ive got it about as easy as possible I can leave my house and be inside the stadium or arena in less than 15 minutes. When we are winning I have no problem dropping the cash and going but if we start to suck the temptation of espn 3 wins out
