Looked like he got hit in the mouth about 5 times last night by the BG center, Elbow Elbowson.

He's not the most graceful and athletic..... Understatement. But, awkward at times he seems much more determined, we are seeing him battling for position in the post, not avoiding contact, moving away from it. All in all, he is playing better in the post, had some good moves after gaining position, and missed a few shots where I think he was surprised he had such a good chance and hurried a baby hook, banged it too hard off back rim. There were times it looked like BG was dropping back to try to prevent him getting the ball or having room. Not quite a double team, exactly but they were not able to ignore him either...we took too many 3's where nobody was under the basket, needed to be more patient, let Trey or Taj get into the lane when we'd have more room outside, and a rebounder on a missed shot. We are not used to having a presence there maybe.

He just can’t quickly elevate and gets blocked a lot. I like his new aggressive approach. Means more trips to the line though. Would like that percentage to get above 60.

He's been doing that high arcing shot at the line. Seems to have improved his average, but sometimes results in a total whiff as well. He needs to work on his technique more. Surprised the coaching staff hasn't gotten that down by now.

It kinda was a moving screen, but the BG kid pushed Trey backward into Persons trying to fight through it, so tit for tat, and no, you're not gonna get that call at the buzzer. Yep, I thought he used the push to his advantage to shield Persons.

I do agree Trey is more aggressive now, and that's good.

Gives him a better chance than before. Some big guys just never learn to hit them, particularly in game situations.

A close win at home against 224 BG is probably very indicative of where BSU is right now....that is to say somewhere in the 200-240 range. KenPom currently has BSU at 177, and knowing the sensibleness of the KenPom algorithm, I accept that as a good evaluation of BSU's record to date. The thing is, much of that record was compiled while BSU actually had a bench, which it currently doesn't and probably won't for the remainder of the season. (This, by the way, puts a huge temptation on Whitford to reinstate Walker). Given that most of the MAC is grouped around the 180-240 range, this means that BSU has fallen from somewhat-above-average MAC to somewhat-below-average MAC.

We are not used to having a presence there maybe. He has gotten more aggressive. The problem is he usually establishes position way to high on the floor. He still rather flip the ball instead of taking it directly to rim or board with a good power move. Trey is finesse all the way and rarely finishes through contact. I have never seen a post player who gets knocked of his spot or is on the floor more than Trey. He really should be a good backup on a good team but for us, he has to start. Not a knock on him but when the opposition does not respect you enough to send double teams, you need to improve that position if you want to contend.

A buzzer beating win over a team missing its best player, a guy who would kill us inside, isn’t super inspiring, but it’s a much needed win nonetheless.
whits comments post game about the team lacking intensity and focus to start the game are exactly what we’ve been saying here. Too often the team is flat and uninspired. Why??

Not a knock on him but when the opposition does not respect you enough to send double teams, you need to improve that position if you want to contend. You're right he seems unstable. At least he is setting up down low more, and fighting for initial position more. And against about 1/2 of the centers in the MAC seems to be able to get position now. Getting knocked around so much is puzzling, it isn't entirely not being aggressive, that has been part of it. Trey is a pretty big guy, just doesn't seem to get rooted and even when aggressive seems to lose balance. As finesse player he is probably only a little above average in the MAC. As an inside player, strictly average. Overall still above average and good enough for us to surround him with good players and win. Now if he could shoot from 15 feet, and had more ability to make quick move with the ball when isolated out there where he is playing, get more shots that way, we wouldn't worry so much. I can't say as confidently that we could never contend with him as the Center. But. Without better shooting and athleticism, which we have lost, we would need an awfully good front line to be a real threat to win the MAC, don't have it now this year. We lost the shooting touch and quite a bit of athleticism in Tyler and Walker. While this year, it was not a case of our being a favorite to win, but one where we had chances. With Tyler dialed in and Walker, the resulting better depth at guard and scoring punch, Trey was not stopping us from contending, at least not playing as well as he is now. We were a top 3 team with Trey, contenders, now we are middle of the pack. I don't now see shooting coming in next year for us to play the same way as we have, although we do still have scholarships. I do see improved athleticism. Whitford's goal of being a very good defensive team is one we might meet next year, I don't see the quickness at guard to do it this year. I do appreciate our playing much harder and that has let us win some ugly games... Trey will not have to be the center of our offense, but he will have to finish better, hit those bunnies and short shots he missed last night.

I can not believe no one has commented on how we almost let a guard that looked like a Delta High school basketball player kill us

Card fan don’t you think we suffer with the loss of 2 players who were very instrumental in our success? Take away around 15 points 3 rebounds and assists and their defense along with experience is a big hit. Seems people point out the opponents loss of a player but forget ours.
