I've reached the point where I have practically given up hope of going anywhere beyond the NIT for the next 5 yr., and even the NIT has been unreachable the last 16 seasons which is simply unacceptable to not have even 1 team qualify for at least 1 fairly respectable postseason tournament. It feels this program is in 1963-1996) Butler Bulldogs mode, slightly ahead of Joe Sexson Butler era. Even qualifying to 2-3 NITs a decade would be "improvement" which would of been considered a ludicrous statement when I entered Ball State in 2001-02. This year was 2015-16 all over again.
I just hope the incoming AD isn't Colonel Sandy 2.0 and finds the slightest reasons of optimism to hand extensions out to coaches.

I think this program at the moment is 1983-1985 Butler. Not absolutely awful, but not good enough.

Any time I see the banners during the golden era it's a painful reminder of the post 2002 regression. I was a Purdue fan before attending Ball State, but even as a Purdue fan from 1989-2001 I always regarded Ball St as a top notch mid major.

I don't like to bring this up but Ball State had very little success from it's start until roughly 1980. We were strong for only 20 years. We have never had the overall success of not only Butler but also Indiana State. The MAC today is not a strong basketball league & I don't see it changing. We can compete & win it again but only with a good coach & the tournament played in a truly neutral court. I would hope after last yr & what is happening this yr the league gets it moved away from Kent & Akron's 2nd home court.

Shoot, the Big Ten HQ is in Illinois, but they had their tournament in NYC, which was a great idea, right? OK. Nevermind.

We should be happy Whit has gotten back to the point that if we want to spend a little money we can play in the post season. I agree with a number of others he has gotten us as far as he is likely to go. (With luck he may be able to get to a final of MAC tourney) We should learn from this NEVER give the MENS basketball coach more than a one yr extension & then only after yr 5. Let's accept the fact that if the coach is successful he is going to leave. If we reward him for the season it is simply in a CASH BONUS.

I would hope after last yr & what is happening this yr the league gets it moved away from Kent & Akron's 2nd home court. It's unfortunate but true. I posted this two years ago: There's a large contingent that believes in the glory days of BSU basketball. While we do lead the conference in tournament championships, I got into the record book and compiled the following stats: Butler: 38-67Indiana State: 58-71Valpo: 31-30Evansville: 14-38Indiana: 1-20Purdue: 2-9IPFW: 3-0 IUPUI: 6-4Akron 15-20BGSU: 34-46 Buffalo: 14-12 Kent: 38-41 Miami: 37-61 Ohio: 33-44CMU: 61-33 EMU: 57-42 NIU: 49-36Toledo: 40-47 WMU: 60-63
We have losing records to just about everyone that matters. Sometimes horrible records. These are before this season, so it's not current.
I'm ok with the red numbers as long as the championship number is bigger than everyone else's. But they're catching up and we're not doing much to distance ourselves anymore.

In the 14 years since I enrolled at BSU, we are 3-14 in the tournament. Have never even won two in a row.

I'm sure I'll get a little busted up for this, but could it be the success of Butler and Indiana State (to some degree) is their ONLY major sport is basketball? Yes, I know they have football teams but they are D-1AA FCS. I am no expert in regards to the finances of universities, but comparing the programs isn't apples to apples, yes? If I am being an idiot, by all means, fire away.
Both bball seasons (mens and womens) were extremely disappointing this year. So much potential and *poof*, gone.

It's not a coincidence Butler started a four year phase-out of scholarship football the same year they doubled the basketball budget and hired Barry Collier as coach.
