In the Whitford era we are now 5-14 in the month of March. Our MAC Tourney record is 1-5. That lone win was last season in the quarters vs. WMU. Three of the last four years we have ended the regular season with at least three losses in a row. We are back.

I was also disappointed in the loss, and further disappointed that Whitford has only managed one (!) MAC tourney win in 5 years, and even further disappointed in the yearly March collapses.
But then I read the quotes in the SP and DN and realized that Whitford is actually doing great in the post season. In fact, I'm going to start calling him "Jimmy Clutch" in honor of how he gets his teams to perform so wonderfully when the chips are really down.
"I thought it was a really hard-fought game, and I was really proud of my guys," head coach James Whitford said.
But maybe could have been even more proud if we were to actually advance in the MAC tourney for once?
"We felt like we were playing the right way all game, like coach [Whitford] said," Tayler Persons said. "I couldn't be prouder of my team.
Persons is clearly repeating the coach's line, so I stand corrected....it's not possible to be any more proud.
Persons again: "It's just a testament to who we are as a team."
Fully agree with that.
Whitford: "I was really proud of the way we played tonight. Unfortunately, came up on the wrong end but it wasn't for lack of effort or lack of competing or lack of playing the right way."
Coach, you have exactly one win in five years. If you think you're "playing the right way" I might respectfully suggest that you are completely full of shit.
"Been working on my shot, you know, so I just wanted to hit it, but it was just one of them days it didn't go in," Teague said.
Dude, you shot 7-46 behind the arc this year. That's 15%...less that half of what is acceptable. For you, "one of them days" is any day. Has no one told you this?
Whitford: "I feel like we can be here and be here for a long time. Kyle Mallers in his two years hasn't played a first‑round game yet. That's something I'm proud of and I want to make sure that maintains itself for four years."
I don't care who you are, or what conference or sport you play in, when you have one win in five post seasons, you don't follow another flop with a quote about "maintaining".....ever. You talk about how you're going to fix what is going so wrong.
As much as I hate the losing, I hate having smoke blown up my ass even more. STFU loser.

Yes finishing in the middle of a one bid conference is something to bullet point on a resume.

As long as Kyle Mallers always gets a bye to Cleveland, nothing else matters!! C'mon. Is that what he said? Anyway, you want the coach to come out and say what? You just lost a game where players played hard, he should be proud of them. The presser is not the place to dissect the game and focus on what went wrong. Put the quote in context. He's right about saying losers point fingers. Sure he's talking about players and coaches, not fans, that's our special talent. Where we shine!

Here is what I would say: Our inability to contain their guards caused us problems in which we did not adjust. We had a couple of players miss point blank layups and free throws when the game was on the line and championship teams finish. We did not. I am terribly disappointed in the way we finished the season and losing 4 straight games to close out the season is not acceptable to me and our program. Our fans deserve better. It is obvious that we have to figure out a way to get tougher and that is on me. Ultimately, this game is about winning and we did not get it done. Excuses are for losers and there is no excuse for our play over the last 2 weeks. We have to get better and I have to get better!!!

Yes, it would be great to have the coach mention a few things we did not do well, especially down the stretch, and, while highlighting how hard we did play, and how proud he is of the effort, mention that they left the job undone, still have work to do, and he as coach will work even harder to get them there.
"I feel like we can be here and be here for a long time. Kyle Mallers in his two years hasn't played a first‑round game yet. That's something I'm proud of and I want to make sure that maintains itself for four years."
And, yes, he did say he wants Mallers to not play a first round game for four years. He didn't say a word about hoping to you, know, win one of those games, or even the whole damn tourney. He never really can get himself to talk about WINNING. Just, sustaining the process, sustaining the getting to Cleveland via a bye. But I was, as always, being somewhat facetious about it only mattering that Mallers just avoid playing in the first round.

I would personally like this quote from Whitford better....
"Once again we collapsed when it mattered. My lack of coaching aptitude and general lack of basketball intelligence has negatively affected what was once a proud program. It is clear after 5 years that I do not have what it takes to get the job done right. Therefore, effective immediately, I will resign as the head coach of Ball State basketball. I apologize to the fans of Ball State University for my incompetence. I admit I should not have been hired in the first place."
I find the quotes he has really made completely unacceptable.

Excuses are for losers and there is no excuse for our play over the last 2 weeks. We have to get better and I have to get better!!! That might be what you want to hear, doubt any coach is going to deliver on all of that. Let's compromise on "Our inability to contain their guards caused us problems in which we did not (or could not) adjust. We did not make big plays we needed down the stretch. I am terribly disappointed in the way we finished the season" He can say "Our fans deserve better. It is obvious that we have to figure out a way to get tougher and that is on me." That's a great press conference line! But, he can also be "proud of the players and their effort." I see no reason to ignore mistakes completely but they did play hard and do a lot of things the right way, too. It is not contradictory to be proud of players and what you did right, but want to eliminate errors and improve. I am enough of a perfectionist that if I really expected us this year to be a championship team, maybe I would be even harder on them, and on myself for sure, than your statement. But that would be practice not in a public player shaming in the press. I do not join you in thinking these guys are ignoring the negatives, they feel horrible to lose and are disappointed and I think they expect us to realize that, not have to say it.

I gave up on this guy after he left Kiapway on the bench for all of Senior Night because he "just didn't know how to handle the situation."
The dude is just soft and isn't cut out to be coaching a D-1 basketball team.

A first round bye in the MAC tourney is his ceiling as a coach, and he knows this. That's why he won't talk about anything beyond it.

I never considered us a championship team this year. I said that from the start, but I did think we'd contend. Yes, we lost some guys. But we over came that. But, when a team wins 6 in a row you do NOT expect it to then lose the final 4 games of the season and go out with a whimper. Not with the same group that played well enough to win 6 in a row still in tact. We started the slide by finishing the first NIU game very poorly after building a big lead. That turned out to be a harbinger for the next 4 games.
In a tourney game, when you have a chance to advance you've got to seal the deal. It's all or nothing at that point. No excuses.
