Happy Fourth Everyone!! Today everyone needs to take a minute and thank any God that you know for the country we live in. No matter who the President is, what people are sitting on the bench in the Supreme Court, and who controls the Congress we have a lot to be thankful for. We have a boatload full of faults but this is still a great place to live. Sometimes it is hard to optimistic but when we look at other parts of the world we are extremely lucky...I think every citizen of this great Republic has won a lottery of sorts. Next time you hear someone that has a view different from yours rather than get mad, shake his or her hand and say you were glad to hear it. Different views and our ability to listen, tolerate, and try to understand where that opinion is coming from is what makes this a great country and you a great citizen. Go Cardinals Go

I totally agree but the fringes to the liberal left and conservative right need to respect one another the way it use to be. It’s in my view gotten hateful by both sides. I would say additionally both sides try to do their very best to put the other side down and absolutely both sides find it almost impossible to find common ground on almost any legislative issue

I always enjoy "secession is legitimate and good" day. I vaguely remember some discussions on this before...but I always thought you missed some of the implications of the events in the 1860's.
And of course apart from abstract theory on the matter, there are so many variables relating to differences in historic context. I hope you now recognize the counterpoint to that where the secession is sought in order to deny fundamental individual human rights and individual liberty.
The 4th is about creating a country that has done fairly well in protecting freedoms, despite the ugly compromise of slavery which lasted for decades.

The ''problem'' is the demonization of ANYONE that does not agree with your view of ANYTHING. If you buy into this relatively new (since the Gingrich/Clinton era) philosophy it will be the road to nowhere as we all have experienced lately in Washington. If your opponent is a demon how do you make a deal with the devil and justify it to your base? If Reagan and Tip O'neal came to a compromise on Social Security surely we can find enough common ground to solve many of the problems that face us all now.

Reagan a lot different man. And had a philosophy that recognized worth in those with whom he disagreed.

00 you made my point. Ronald Reagan would be run out of town on a rail by the Limbaugh conservative wing in this day and age.

It's not just the political spectrum. I agree with bsu0, Reagan would not fit in the current mainstream Trump GOP, but he was a completely different politician, had some principles, could compromise, and govern for all, deal cordially with opponents not with juvenile name calling.

Trump is a populist, he isn't even a Republican. Dude, Democrats did nothing but pillory Reagan as an out of touch, hare brained, far right zealot. The same thing they are doing to Trump. I know your memory is terrible, but come on, give us break. Do you think we are dumb as your students ? The Democrats have moved so far left we will likely see them nominate a proclaimed socialist within the next 20 years.
