I believe that's not only possible, but very likely Meyer's wife didn't tell him about it. She knew if she did, Jake Smith would likely lose his job. Exactly right and why didn’t this spouse “bite the bullet” and get a divorce or at a minimum call police if bodily harm or she felt life was endangered. I see a “deep pockets” scenario and a woman knowingly taking action to tarnish Coach Meyer! Just my opinion from what is reported so far. She did. Divorce and restraining order. I hope we’re not victim blaming

Thanks for that info as I wasn’t aware she divorced him.
So is the lawsuit then aimed to punish Meyer and his spouse her supposed former friends?
Is it for money to maintain a lifestyle she had become accustomed to living?
To send a message to other victims and those who have moral and/or legal responsibility to take appropriate action?
All of the above would be my guess!

What lawsuit by wife? I didn't catch that.
Meyer violated Federal law, wasn't that the issue the University is investigating?

What lawsuit by wife? I didn't catch that. Meyer violated Federal law, wasn't that the issue the University is investigating? He violated the terms of his personal contract with the university. Outside of Title IX issues, his contract had specific language calling for him to immediately report such activity when he becomes aware of it. Meyer says he had no knowledge of the 2015 incident. That is what is being investigated. He could be fired for not fulfilling his contractual liability, not violation of Title IX. While Jake Smith was an employee of OSU, the incident was domestic in nature, and not involving the university. To my knowledge, the wife, Courtney Smith, was not an employee, or student, at OSU, so I'm not sure how her Title IX rights were violated.

That's what I thought. Not wife suing Meyer.

Who knows, the investigation by the "indepdendent" (has 3 OSU BOT members) committee may determine Meyer did everything he was obligated to do .

No lawsuit by wife against anyone. Allegations of Meyer wrongdoing relate to contract terms, not some federal lawsuit filed by anyone.
What is essentially a morals clause in contracts is not uncommon. This one seems to address a Title IX standard.
In this case the University is covering their ass by requiring coaches to report possible violations under a Title IX standard. That language meets all the requirements of Title IX, may go beyond the Unversity's legal obligation...

The original tenet of the 1972 Title IX was the following -
'No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance.'
I do not see how this is a Title IX violation. This was a case of repeated domestic violence. Ms. Smith had no affiliation with OSU. She was not excluded from participation in activities or benefits of an education program or financial aid. She was not discriminated against based on her sex. She was physically abused by a complete asshole, who hopefully will never coach again.
What OSU, and its athletic program are dealing with is the fact that they had such a low-life as an employee. Meyer, as Smith's supervisor, was contractually obligated to immediately report such heinous act to OSU.
Meyer's defense is that he knew nothing about such activities by Smith while under the employ of OSU. That is what OSU is attempting to understand.

Cardfan12 I work in higher ed. in Colorado and all of us directors of units have to sign legal document as part of the job making us "responsible employee" for reporting incidents including intimate partner abuse or stalking among other things. OSU and other institutions might have similar policy.

I think we should all be feeling a little uneasy about now. I think it's pretty common knowledge on this board that Herman molests collies, but yet none of us has gone to the authorities

Are you telling me that Title IX has now morphed into a tool to cause supervisor to be police (or Gestapo) over the personal lives of all of those reporting to them? Is this correct? Title IX now mandates oversight of the personal lives of each employee by their supervisor???

i believe supervisors and anyone who is employed...collecting a pay check from a state university, is required to report. i am not sure if this is the original intent or not. to me it doesn't matter. i am required to report so i will do what my employer asks unless i have a rich uncle to leave me some inheritance...not to mention its a safety issue.
