5 games in Ball State is the 22nd MOST penalized team in the nation. The Cardinals have been flagged 38 times for 366 yards, or 73.2 yards per game.

This isn’t necessarily a sign of undisciplined play, I believe this is half of the double edge. Youthful team, new system, coaches just trying to get the kids to play fast. I would rather swallow 75-100 yards of penalties then to see them set back & not be aggressive. Offense line depletion’s & defense youth learning; don’t put the brakes on, let it rain. Once these guys get in sync/level out the bad should come down, and the good come up (hopefully). We’re on the verge of finding out where & who this team is and can be, along with the rest of the MAC.

You need discipline as you get older and experienced, and to accelerate the tempo of your game. I know we’re young. I would love for BSU to speed up the tempo even more, but it requires discipline to execute that way, otherwise, you end up with mistakes, like penalties. More technique work and conditioning ( being able to execute when exhausted ) would add to this team. I loved seeing BSU open up the passing game yesterday. Our offensive cadence is quicker than last year, which I love. I just think we need some more work on the simple technique work, and stick with it to avoid senseless penalties.

But it is not necessarily something where coaches can influence that. The holding penalties are tricky to evaluate. A guy gets beat, he has a small margin of error to get away with the hold, the alternative he knows is that the play is busted. Can these guys avoid being beat more often? That is probably more just ability and strength than playing to fast or system.
The late hit personal fouls fall into that category where playing fast and hard will lead to some penalties, I also agree there. May be a trade off.
I think you are on to be philosophical and take some lumps while they improve and cut down on the errors which might have meant they were beat, had to hold or, couldn't get there quite on time on D and so on. This is the curse of playing kids who are not quite ready for prime time, or lack ability and have to play perfectly, have no margin for error because of that. You hope they make it, but I doubt they do this year in most cases.

Ok, I’m reading trying to take in everyone’s point of view. Truthfully I think in a lot of ways we’re all probably right to some extent. It’s a lot of everything, youth, new system, new position, undisciplined, getting beat. For me if youre going to make a mistake, make it full speed. Keep drilling proper technique, proper angle of attack, but keep going full speed.

What I don’t want to see is the same offenders repeatedly making the same mistakes!
Short of that I can tolerate the miscues!
