Lembo gave up a redshirt year on an outstanding freshman knowing in his heart that an untested freshman at the QB position will keep you up at night and will cost you a few victories. We thought it was an easier call, but I think you are right there were pluses and minuses. Those who had the greatest enthusiasm for Neal and panned Lembo for not making the decision earlier may have seen his potential but overlooked what the problem was going to be with the team. We needed to execute well, we needed some defense. Milas may have had the best chance of playing ball control and minimizing error in execution. That is probably what made the decision hard for Lembo. What we saw in Milas was a bad start, but we knew from last year he had a problem where he couldn't always close the deal and make big plays. So Neal looked good in that department, but we now find it was not all roses to make a change. I don't think this team was ever going to be all that good, even with very good QB play, but to meet expectations and get above 500 we needed to execute, avoid errors and see improvement on defense to win fairly low scoring games. None of that has happened. Maybe we will see the team put it together in a couple of games down the stretch. Having more stretches of good play will not mean we run the deck and win these games, but a little success would be a very good outcome for Neal and the team looking at next year.

In a preseason poll, ESPN had Ball sate as one of the 10 most improved teams heading into the season. Now at 2-6 the season is lost and the question is how did it come to this? Coach Lembo has yet to fully address the defense, that much has been obvious. But less obvious is the fact that coach Lembo has been on a mission to facilitate the growth of a true-freshman quarterback. And by doing so, he's derailed what could have been a very memorable season. Neal may have the size, mobility, and arm-strength and could very well be the future of Ball State Football. But what happened to Jack Milas? The "It factor" in sports is an elusive trait that is difficult to measure. Over the years the first round of the NFL draft is littered with busts that at the combine show all the measurables scouts are looking for. But as teams often find out, the measurables they crave are not enough. The "It Factor" is as important of any of them and I believe that Milas possesses that trait. He understand the system better and earned the respect of his teammates last year and seemed poised and primed to excel this year. Milas takes risks, believes he can make any throw and because of the confidence he possesses, may make some errors. But the rewards usually outweigh the risks. And as a former president of ours once said "If you take no risks you will suffer no defeats. But if you take no risks you will earn no victories". Due to Neal's inexperience the offense has been hand-cuffed all year. And because of the conservative nature of the play calling, the offense has had little margin for error. Do you think that ESPN was banking on a true-freshman quarterback leading the improvement this year? No, they were counting on Milas leading an explosive offense. Coach Lembo's gamble has backfired and the losers are the seniors who now have to play out the string without the prospect of making bowl game. Heads should roll in Muncie and take notice coach Lembo, you are now on the clock I'm quite sure that ESPN and anyone else making a preseason evaluation of BSU took into account that we would be starting a sophomore QB who had had a promising freshman year. The problem was that QB never showed up on the field. To me, Jack never looked as good (even against VMI) this year as he did at the end of last year. A 1-for-8, 5 yd. performance to start the A&M game surely didn't help and an 0-5 start against EMU didn't show any “it factor” IMO. If there was an “it factor” on display in that game, it was when Neal replaced Milas and led the team back from a 17-point deficit. BTW, he only completed 24-28 passes in that game.

Milas was given 2 quick series in the EMU game the entire team was overwhelmed against Texas A&M in the first half. Is that what we are judging the kid on? If so, you did not catch much of his play last year.

One fear I have is that Milas will transfer after this year and that will leave us Neal and Morrison. If Neal would go down at any point we would realy be screwed

Now you know why I sang the praises of Kelly Page while he was on the team. Most in his situation would have transferred. At one time he was a nationally ranked high school QB. He stayed after he was beat out of the QB job and played as a back up. The ultimate team player. One of the best Cardinals ever IMHO.

Milas was up and down last year. Looked great against wmu, pretty good vs cmu, and horrible vs niu and Umass. It's not like he looked all conf. He hadn't looked as good as we hoped he would to start the year. Face the facts. Riley Neal was always going to take over as qb. It was just a matter of time. He showed more spark immediately. There are some who observed fall camp that felt Riley was already the better qb. He has a better arm, runs better, and is much taller. (Able to see over the line). Jack is a solid qb. Riley Neal has star potential. He has much more "it" than Jack. It's just how it is.
