I was looking for Charlie Hawk at the game last night and didn't see him. Checked out why, and was saddened to learn that Ball State's biggest cheerleader had passed in October. Obituary

Sad. It was always good to see him at games.

Yes, he’s gone. When I was in high school a million years ago we passed him on the way to new castle regionals. He rode his bike to new castle..... A dedicated fan of all local teams.

I'm surprised the university hasn't said or done anything to recognize him. For all his limitations, he was the most die-hard fan I ever saw, for as long as I can remember.
If anyone deserves a banner at Worthen, he does. But I know some of the athletic department didn't care much for him, so it probably won't happen.

Was he the older guy that used to sit in the corner of the student section?

Yep. It's amazing how little there is online about him. Apparently there was a GoFundMe for his funeral expenses. I had always heard that he lived off of an inheritance, but don't really know much about him, only that he was mentally challenged in some fashion.
I remember several years ago I saw him at Senior Night for the women's volleyball team, and he gave each of the seniors a collage of photos mounted on cardboard. Each player took it and gave him a hug. That's the kind of fan he was.

Ah that’s too bad. I used to sit near him sometimes from 2008-2012. Always seemed really into the games and took stats on his gameday program.

One problem I have with Ball State is that they do not do enough for their great fans and alums. When Wave Myers passed there was no mention of it on the official BSU site. I wrote Tom Collins about this oversight and he wrote me back saying the school had a policy of not mentioning deaths on the internet site. this was for a man whose

ENTIRE life was dedicated to the school. When I questioned that ''policy'' Collins never had the guts to answer. We can do much better. It made me so mad I could spit fire. Collins is right up at the top with Lembo as the tools that we have had in Muncie. We all love you Charlie.
