I'm a fan of both sports, and they are like banana milkshakes and strawberry milkshakes....just a matter of taste.
It's just amusing when a football fan, who would happily spend 3 hours of their life totally engrossed in their team's defensive struggle without touchdowns, professes to be unable to understand the appeal of a 1-0 soccer game for soccer fans who appreciate the nuances of the sport.
Another example is a 1-0 pitchers duel in baseball that might involve multiple runners in scoring position who are left stranded. These can be incredibly tense and gripping, especially if you are into one team or the other.
Football fans and soccer fans criticizing each other's sports are among the most stupid and pointless sports discussions. But I don't think most football fans like a 6-0 score. The IND-JAX game was pretty boring. And frustrating. Soccer fans seem to be happy with a 1-nil score. Probably why they freak out so much when someone actually does score.

Football fans and soccer fans criticizing each other's sports are among the most stupid and pointless sports discussions. Americans haven't played or watched soccer so it is harder to watch the action and have much idea what is happening to lead to a score or prevent a score. Most outside the US have no idea what's going on in American football.
So it's not just taste it is ignorance. Up to a point. Pace of a game and the amount of dramatic action is different enough to give fans with desire for constant stimulation somewhat more to like in BB or American FB. Compare to ice hockey but not the raw speed and power. Watching the soccer players run back and forth doing very little is like basketball slow motion to most, but not as many scores. Not as much ebb and flow in the game for sure.
Baseball? Good point about the tension and gripping suspense factor. This applies to soccer, of course. But if it is going to be 1-0, maybe they should advertise that in advance so everyone can just come for the last period.
Cricket anyone?

The rules in football also totally hamstring the defense. Football did not always feature high scoring.

But I suppose the Jacksonville fans liked it alright. Just like I like the 2007 Colts-Ravens playoff game where no touchdowns were scored. I remember being quite well pleased with that game.
Or, let's say TY Hilton has a 12 catch, 150 yard game, but with no touchdowns. Would you be bored with TY that game? Was Dwight Freeny a boring player? Lawrence Taylor? Dick Butkis? These guys rarely, if ever scored any points. Did you find them dull and uninteresting?
Point is that there are a lot of exciting, interesting things that can happen in a sporting event that are not scoring. For some reason, football fans like to play stupid like they can't possibly understand this where soccer is concerned.

It's hard to say whether I prefer to watch football or soccer. I guess it would mostly depend on the teams playing. One thing in favor of soccer is the relative lack of commercials. By about the third time I see the same commercial within one quarter of football, I'm ready to go do something else.
Likewise, here is another tough call: Who would I rather kick in the nuts 1) the evangelical soccer fan who thinks soccer is superior...mostly because it isn't American?, or 2) the chucklehead football fan who knows nothing about soccer and can't see past the score line? Once again, it depends on the actual people involved....ideally I could kick both of them in the nuts.

Since the respective sports may have fan bases that includes more former players from each sport, I suggest kicking the soccer fans.
But since American girls play a lot of soccer, following your rule of making your decision on a case by case basis, you may want to look at the spouse of the fan before assaulting them.

Yeah whatever. I'm an ex football player myself and I must say that the group is not a particularly physically impressive one. A solid majority of lard-asses.

It is strange that millions of American kids play soccer and have for decades but very few ever become rabid fans. For some reason I cannot put my finger on it has not become a fave in America.
