That's what happens when you reach into the knuckle-head pile for recruits. Do you mean losing 3 good guards in one year, JT (yes a knucklehead, but very talented), Walker (not much clue he was a knucklehead) plus having a senior who had played well 3 years disappear unexpectedly after an injury early, and that it was somehow predictable?
I don't think so. We started the season with depth at guard that looked like it would be a real plus by tourney time when we had a good chance to have all playing well.
2/3 of that equation were dope smoking knuckleheads. How is that hard to understand ? When did JT become "very talented", he was good but in no way a standout.

2/3 of that equation were dope smoking knuckleheads. How is that hard to understand ? When did JT become "very talented", he was good but in no way a standout. Neither JT or Walker had such obvious red flags when we recruited them. That's 20-20 hindsight. JT was a risky decision to keep on the roster after his track record, but I think that was defensible call.
I disagree about his talent, and potential impact. He had very high up side in any game where he showed up to play. Perhaps speculative, but he might have won a big game or two for us if available. We lacked athleticism and outside shooting which he could provide. Hey, he even played defense once in a while! At the least he would have been a far better choice than Sellers playing guard off the bench.
Besides all that, many of us here think we need to take a few more chances than we do in recruiting risky players. Can't have it both ways when we lose the gamble.

I hate to hear that about Ish. We need him. I've heard grumblings about whether or not Hazen will ever play again.

Evidently Hazen had the same injury in high school and sat out a whole year. With it reappearing I have to wonder about his future. Will he ever truly be healed? Will it come back again?

Bad Back in my opinion will always be likely to be a problem. Even lots of surgeries called successes by doctors don't allow people to have a normal life. Unless his early problems were in some way related to growth spurts I suspect he has a life long problem. So questions are can he play basketball without hurting himself more & if he does play is he going to be able to withstand someone pushing on him or elbowing him in the back or side.

I told my wife what it was called and she said its the type of thing that generally will almost always reoccur at some point. It might be fine for a year or two or could return in a week. There are surgery's that can fix it but once you take that route Basketball would probably be done

Im a dick but if he has to miss all of this year I kinda hope Whit asks him to take a medical. It would open a scholarship for us and he still gets school payed for

No, I think there is a choice. You can keep him on the active roster and roll the dice that you get X number of games out of him over the next 2.5 years. It's a bit like a mine field you you never know if he plays 30 or 2 games per year. As Calhoun mentions, might be better off with another body, even if he's not as talented, using the scholarship.

My middle son, God bless his soul, had the same injury and injured his back playing basketball his freshman year. His L2 and L3 vertebrae had stress fractures. We went to a specialist in Indy who told us it is becoming more and more common because kids go from one sport to another or continue playing and training without any breaks. Tyler had to wear a special brace when he slept and he gave up basketball though his dr. told him he could have continued to play. Tyler decided to give up basketball, partly because he could throw 90 mph. Point is it comes down to pain threshold and lots of rest. I can tell you there were many nights after Tyler pitched where his backed ached and he had a hard time sleeping. Tyler was one tough embre so I know what Hazen is going through. We were told that rest with the brace and lots of it would be the only way the stress fractures would heal but reaccurrence is a posibility. My guess is Hazen will come back towards the end of the year and give it shot.

I guess we don't know for sure Hazen's diagnosis, but my daughter had similar overuse injury in gymnastics as reevo describes, same medical opinion. She also gave up a sport she loved, but it was highest risk of recurrence. Played other sports through HS, initially for a time with a brace.
Since it happened before in basketball for Hazen, has to be some risk of recurrence. Hard to second guess either way they decide.
