With all of this coaching talk starting to come around again, I was wondering if anyone had any inside knowledge about our 2010 coaching search.
Was it always going to be Pete Lembo? How close were we to Bill Polian and would he have even came? (Things worked out better for him since he is HC at Nevada) What about Chuck Martin who I heard we couldn't offer enough? Were there any other names out there or people we know interviewed?

Brian Polian, you mean. At the time there were several reports saying he was going to be hired. But who knows, really. I'd heard the same thing about Chuck Martin.

I have often heard we really actually wanted a D1A coach. First, because we could afford it. Second, because, correctly, a key factor in our coaching job is developing and recruiting marginal talent that can excel. Third, to bring in an established staff.
Clearly finding the perfect fit is not easy. Brady came in and did not have a staff to bring with him, but had some very special connections who were great assistants, and his development of players was helped by insisting on better talent to start with but also that ability to motivate. Thinking about it, the Michigan job did not fit him nearly as well because there the recruiting and the kind of player development and the assistant coaching staff issues are so much different, even the motivation of players, at the powerhouse school.
At the other end of Brady's turn, we had some talent which Stan was unable to motivate and develop for example. So that worked better for Pete and his staff who exceeded expectations that first year. Stan didn't have the personality to do things the same way as Brady, and did not have the organizational ability of Pete. So on paper, a holdover very good assistant even at the same school can fail.
Damned if you do damned if you don't on lots of this. It's risky to take unproven but talented coaches from a lower level, but it may be a chance to catch somebody on the way up, and ride with him. High D1 assistants or coaches making a lateral move sometime have history and experience that fit. Often they fail to meet two of the three criteria.
That staff thing is important. Lots of talk about coaching problems here is about staff. Lembo's current problems have at least partly been due to losing assistants and breaking up a very good team of assistants. Some of it may be a problem with those recruiting relationships and pipelines lost. Rebuilding a staff is tricky. We can hope it is just going slow but can work out, or maybe Pete will have make major changes.
One thing is certain, changing coaches is always risky, and I seriously doubt anybody is completely happy whatever we do.
