This is one of those minor celebrity deaths that, for some obscure personal reason, strikes me as particularly sad and significant.
"Nesmith stated that Tork was better at playing guitar than bass. In Tork's commentary, he stated that Jones was a good drummer and had the live performance lineups been based solely on playing ability, it should have been Tork on guitar, Nesmith on bass, and Jones on drums, with Dolenz taking the fronting role, rather than as it was done (with Nesmith on guitar, Tork on bass, and Dolenz on drums)."
What's not stated in the above is that the actual live line up left Davy with nothing to do but play the maracas. Even as a kid I recognized this as sort of lame. Apparently they couldn't go with the Beatles lead/rhythm/bass guitar plus drums arrangement because Davy couldn't play any sort of guitar, and they had to have him up front because he was the cute one. And then it was awkward because Micky was the better and more distinctive singer, and actually did sing lead on most of their hits. But they were pros and figured it all out and worked around it.

Yeah. I remember hearing that the network hacks just wanted them to pretend to be The Beatles. The guys actually had musical talent and rebelled, and started to play new songs, some written by Neil Diamond for them.
