I know there are some that see value in early season RPI's....I personally don't. I took the following RPI rankings from ESPN this am.
Here are the four teams playing at EKU this week end and their ranking:
Eastern Kentucky 293
Ball State 288
South Carolina State 93
Longwood 311
So, the way I read this SCS should beat every team handly and BSU should really only beat Longwood in a tightly contested contest. And, although BSU ranks slightly ahead of EKU we would agree I think that they should beat us on their homecourt.
So, lets compare the results vs. the RPI rankings after the tournament.

RPI ratings this early in the season have no value. I'm amazed ESPN even bothered to post them.

Of course, you all know where this is going...right?
South Carolina State is a god-awful team ranked 326 by KenPom. So far they have a 20-point loss to 210 Charleston and a win over an NAIA team.
But if we beat them (and we certainly should) Kid will be saying the rest of the year that we beat the #93 team in the country. Even as the weeks pass and SC St. takes their inevitable fall into the 300's of the RPI, he will still be saying that.
Longwood (mascot: horse) is 257 and EKU is 241.
Look out for Longwood's international players Long Wang, Dat Kok, Won Hung Lo and Bjorn Wiffabiggun, as well as returnees Hugh Junit, Dick C. Normous, Mike Oxawopper, Phil Hurrup, Jai Untkok.

I thought Longwood's mascot was a donkey?

I was mistaken...I thought I remembered them as the ''Gamecocks''

I'm surprised Longwood tee shirts don't independently fund their athletic endeavors year in and year out......

I just used ESPN RPI not Pomroy, but it appears ESPN's rankings would indicate we should lose 2-3 and not sure but wouldn't Pomroy suggest the same? I don't really care but if we win 2 of 3 in Kentucky we're tracking towards 16 or 17 wins which will give me major bragging rights!! And, General can't wait till we upset Valpo...where are they ranked? ?

Upset VALPO? Butler is ranked in the top twenty and we have been reduced to HOPING we can UPSET Valpo. This is pathetic. Tony Hinkle is up there in the ''Big Fieldhouse in the Sky'' laughing his ass off.

Actually, if ESPN's is a real RPI then no, they wouldn't indicate the same. Guys like Ken Pomeroy and Jeff Sagarin give teams an initial rating and expect that their ratings will improve while more info about teams is gained during the season. In and RPI (ratings percentage index) all teams start at zero day one and they don't even have a shred of accuracy until at least mid-season, which is why you see goofy things like an 0-1 South Carolina State team that lost by 20 to College of Charleston ranked 93rd. It's total nonsense. An RPI is a set formula. The traditional RPI formula is RPI = (Winning Percentage X .25) + (Opponents Winning Percentage X .5) + (Opponents, Opponents Winning Percentage X .25). Pomeroy's Current Ratings Ball State - 174 Eastern Kentucky - 240 Longwood - 254 South Carolina State - 328 Sagarin's Current Ratings Eastern Kentucky - 196 Ball State - 216 Longwood - 304 South Carolina State - 333

Just focus on beating EKU. I'm sure Mr. Sandy would like that.

The standard that I have always used is 200-300 is bad and lower than 300 is terrible. I mean....that's my standard now. A dozen years ago I would have said anything under 200 is terrible.
So, depending on which rating system you like, we are either playing one mediocre team and two terrible teams, or two bad teams and one terrible team.
If you're paying attention to the RPI at this point, you are just disqualifying yourself from being taken seriously.

Well, let's just get three wins. RIP to the RPI at this point in time.
