Ah, the grouchy purist. I'll say that I'm not huge on mixing but I had a person suggest once that using a really good bourbon in a mixed drink got you a really good mixed drink. I'd tend to agree with that. I'd like to see this demonstrated by a blind taste test before I believe it.
I would also like to see people who are gushing over this or that brand demonstrate their ability to distinguish between sips of different brands in a blind taste test.
Probably can't tell you Brand A vs. Brand B, but I can tell you rough vs. smooth vs. ultra-smooth. What you like, is what you like, and everyone has a different taste.

I think many of the super connoisseurs here would quickly STFU after a battery of blind taste tests. link

I think many of the super connoisseurs here would quickly STFU after a battery of blind taste tests. linkI would certainly give it a try. After 5 or 6 shots, don’t think I would give a damn what I was drinking. It would be interesting though. Which one of you guys is going to host the BSU Fans bourbon taste test? I am thinking 10 bourbons chosen by the mods. Of course, we have to remember social distancing so I am not drinking after you nasty mfers! I am thinking Rob would host.

But since you are just repeating your same valid point in an increasingly dickish manner, I’d ask if one of the connoisseurs completed a blind taste test successfully would you STFU? I doubt it.

Several points emerge from this discussion. And from the General's careful attention to scientific arguments.
Maybe most relevant is that if you drink to get hammered, speed and quantity of consumption are most important.
Second, mixed drinks really complicate this discussion.
Finally, science seems to confirm there is no accounting for taste.
So on the one hand who pays that much attention to science? If a label makes us think the product tastes better or makes our guest think so, it probably justifies a price premium.
But science should not be ignored either, for drinking to get hammered, one or two rounds of fine drink suffice, then get out the swill...

But since you are just repeating your same valid point in an increasingly dickish manner, I’d ask if one of the connoisseurs completed a blind taste test successfully would you STFU? I doubt it. The thing is that when I did the blind taste testing myself, I was shocked at how difficult it was. Then when I did some research, I found that my experience was typical. And I firmly believe that most people have never done these things and thus have mistaken beliefs on the matter. So, to answer your question, if ONE of the connoisseurs who are touting expensive brands could prove that they can consistently make distinctions, I would not STFU because I would take them to be a tasting prodigy and an anomaly. If several of our alleged connoisseurs could prove it, I probably would STFU because that would be a truly astounding and baffling situation completely contrary to all my previous experience and research. And I also feel like people who fail to accept my valid points richly deserve some increasingly dickish repetitions.

Well, so much for trying to create a fun thread during a time when we have very little sports to talk about. WTF? Enjoy your cabin fever.
