For dropping the hard R in a streaming iRacing event over the weekend.
First the networks picked it up, then the sponsors (all but Plan B) ended their commitments to him, finally Chip Ganassi released him from his contract.

No one will even pick this guy up as a tire changer after this deal.
Maybe I’m naive, but how does a 27 year old roll an N bomb off the tip of his tongue so casually? Do these kids grow up hearing this like it was the 50s 60’s?
FYI...before you start trolling the dirty South, this kid grew up in Sacramento, CA

He also has some Japanese heritage (mother is Japanese American) so ... I don't know but you might think he'd be aware of societal sensitivity to these type of issues.

Based on the story I read, his use of the word had nothing at all to do with racism, but everything to do with the current idiotic, hypocritical rules of our society. From what I read, he directed the word at his spotter, who is white, and probably a buddy of his.
My guess would be that he is something of a rap music fan, as nearly all younger people are, and he has absorbed the phrases and style of conversing popular in that genre. But, of course, some people are privileged in today's rules and some are not. It's all based on your skin pigment, you see. Larson is not one of the privileged and overstepped his place, so he needs to be punished.
If he thinks he might escape punishment by explaining his intent, or making a groveling apology or anything like that, he can forget. His skin pigmentation and racial status does not warrant forgiveness.

He'll have to suffer in a back marker for a couple years, followed by a couple year stint with a mid-pack team to "earn" his way, but he's young and talented, and fans forgive/forget quickly.

Just wondered this: If you're white and singing along with a rap song you like, and the N-word comes up....are you allowed to continue to sing along? Or do you have to fall silent through those two syllables? What if you're recorded? Is it OK if you're alone? But what if you think you're alone and someone hears you? Where is Orwell when we need him?
Sounds like a silly question, but somebody's career could hinge on this one day. That's what a pathetically stupid corner our society has painted itself into.

How are those two incidents the same?

Papa John used it in what he thought was a private conversation with a few other people. I'm guessing Larson thought he was on his private chat line.
I just mean that the response to white people using the term is pretty universal. Except that people with certain political alignments are forgiven, while those with the "wrong" alignment are not.

He was explaining to his PR firm how Colonel Sanders used to act when (ie used that term) he was alive, and the public did not chastize him. It was meant as a correlation, not direct reference to any person or group. John had enemies who wanted to take him down, and the recording was released. Not quite the same, but you are right. Depending on which end of the political spectrum you align yourself does make a difference on how you your mistake is treated.

How are those two incidents the same? Because, regardless of the intent or the context of the usage, corporate America will distance itself as far as possible from the source.

Plus NASCAR is not the invulnerable juggernaut it has been. With all the other uncertainty they better be conservative if they want a share of TV and to retain their sponsors who bear a lot of the cost of the production.
