"No. 9 Butler improves to 10-1 with 88-52 win over S. Utah"
Reflections at the end of a year:
I used to make sure I was able to attend the annual pre-conference game each year with Butler.......went with my dad as a kid, with class mates as a student, took my wife as a young adult, dressed my kids in their Cardinal shirts as a parent........It was a welcome trip back to campus as a working alum and every other year was a trip to the big city to sit in the Hinkle Fieldhouse that you only saw on television during the HS state finals.......proudly cheering, among many others, for a year-long chance to brag about a victory or curse the dreaded Dogs about how the officials cost us another proud Cardinal basketball moment........
As I eagerly waited for last night's Indiana State game to start, it occurred to me that time has cruelly marched on and those wonder years are a distant memory. The "buttdogs" no longer look down their noses at us.........heck, they no longer even look our way. Depression was quickly setting in as the Sycamore game progressed into the second half.....I keep telling myself the Cardinals are in the down-side of a regular cycle but ....my memory is quickly jogged......our pre-conference in-state rivals are now IUP-somethings, not the IUs, PUs, Butlers.......Indy doesn't even consider us for a holiday foursome in the downtown arena anymore and I doubt I'll ever again hear SportsCenter utter the phrase "the school that Dave Letterman went to"..........
Oh well, I'll make my holiday sojourn back to Muncie this weekend, I'll look for some new Cardinal gear at the bookstore (but it will be closed) and I'll be among the crowd next Tuesday cheering on the Fighting Cardinals against the Bulldogs in another memorable December clash .....
......wait, we're not playing Butler next Tuesday? Oh, it's the Alabama A&M Bulldogs........my bad.
