You have a point Rob, I get that, but it's only acceptable in my experience when you are in the group treating others with respect and then sometimes use could even be inclusive. Probably very rare used as a slur.
So, agreed never is a little too strong.
This was Walton forbidding n***** music in his presence. It was not just the word but derogating the music, dare I say culture, and excluding it, that evrn his white players couldn't play it.
I won't argue his taste or his playlist, but it's a stupid power play and in this case offensive.

Your right Waltons and the teams usage was wrong no matter how you look at it

The n word caused me to take an ass beating out in front of dill street one night. I was with a couple guys from the b ball team we knew the bouncer so when we got there he motioned us up to skip the line. As that was happening a group of guys said something using the n word directed at us. I whipped around and pushing and shoving quickly escalated I assumed my friends were right behind me in the fray but they just walked in. They later said risking their scholarship was not worth it. We continued to ge friends and still are but I never really forgave them that

Instructive story.
That they just had to accept the racism is part of the evil of it.
You weren't "used to it" and reacted. Their reality was accepting it.
That's the part we can't understand.
NBA players have a lot more leverage here, that's a difference today maybe.

Not justifying the language but if all of us had a lens focused on us 24/7 we would all likely be damned for poor language or behavior. As far as the NBA players and their “leverage”, I beg to differ. Silver and the league have burned the ships with regard to their bowing to BLM and their blind eye to their masters in communist China. Their ratings are down to all time low levels and I won’t watch another minute, not now or anytime in the foreseeable future. They can be woke and broke as far as I care. Screw em.

I think they see it worth the risk to go with what they believe. I salute that.
Players are not really partners in the NBA and to some extent exploited, but we all know they are there because the pay is awfully good, and I don't expect them to give it up over a China connection. That they support BLM has nothing to do with supporting China, they can't exactly do anything about that.
Those who are criticizing the players for BLM are at risk of using China as a red herring. When the players were just good quiet entertainers, were not protesting anything, nobody was criticizing them or NBA BB much for China...I guess the NBA was just fine and the players just fine until they decided race matters in their lives? I don't get that reaction by some.
If you want to protest China human rights violations, fine. But they care more about BLM and have an understandable priority.
Walton screwed the pooch, but I tend to agree it is not a firing offense. But he needs to do more than apologize and has to have some consequences as well as make some changes. The former player has a point but I really didn't think every athletic team had to join in protest either. Or every player.
But then again, maybe if I have a black team mate, or work out with black athletes daily, I should do something. Support that team mate or fellow athlete and speak up and stop the crap that accepts racist language and possibly racist attitudes by coaches.

That is true especially about race if we are Walton's generation or older.

So if you think there should be consequences, not sure what they could be other than stepping down? Seems like how these things tend to be handled these days.

An ill informed group of multi millionaire players who somehow believe that minorities are being targeted by police? And their solution is to buy into BLM and Antifa terrorist propaganda while turning a blind eye to a communist regime that literally executes and incarcerates ANYONE who opposes their doctrine? It’s selective and purely ignorant woke outrage. Maybe the NBAPA should demand that China allow them unfettered access to tour the country and witness what is actually happening in the country they are embracing instead of trashing the fans and country and law enforcement in the United States. Eff the NBA.
